This is a beautiful church built by the african slaves that worked the gold mines in Ouro Preto. Simple and lovely.

Impressive to know the church was built for the slaves. The paitings in the walls are wonderful. Gorgeous wood art work.

The photos of this church absolutely do not do it justice. It is gorgeous, and my equal favourite in Ouro Preto, tied with Sao Francisco de Assis. The church is located a little further away from the centre of town in a fairly quiet square. We drove there on our last day in Ouro Preto, but you could easily walk... More

It took me three days to get inside this church. The hours of opening are wrong. The church seems to be closed now to visitors. I went once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and both times it was closed. I waited over an hour the 2nd time because people in the city really like this church. Finally I... More

It's worth visiting both to compare. I think there is one oval church in Porto (Portugal) as well, and one in Germany. O que essa igreja tem... More

According to legend, the church's interior is bare because the slaves ran out of gold after erecting the baroque building. In the unusual oval interior the church... More

But very rich nevertheless. If it's open go everywhere inside. Very interesting architecture _ round spaces as in a rosary.
