The Petropolis cathedral is dedicated to San Pietro d'Alcantara, patron saint of the city. The construction of the church began at the end of the 19th century and was completed only in 1925, while the bell tower is more recent although in the same neo-Gothic style. The most interesting thing is that in the chapel to the right of the entrance, closed by grates, there are the tombs of Peter II, the last emperor of Brazil, his wife and his family.

Beautiful church with an exuberant facade located in the center of Petrópolis. Worth knowing. Some of the most important nobles in the history of the Brazilian empire are buried inside this church. Despite all the work on the church's facade, the interior is a bit disappointing. It's quite simple.
On your way out, take the opportunity to visit the little shop and cafe that are on the other side of the street, close to the stairs.

We visited Petrópolis with an excursion from RIO, 1:20 hours of travel. It's good because the guide tells you things. Simple and beautiful, with spectacular stained glass windows, only 4 came from France, the rest made in Brazil. There are the tombs of the royal family.

This is a beautiful and historic church. The Imperial Chapel there is the burial site of many Portuguese royal family members, including Dom Pedro II. Stop for 15-20 minutes and get dome nice photos.

Gothic style church which contains some particularly beautiful stained glass windows. You need to park on the street and find a person to pay a parking fee by the hour. We left our car at the cathedral and walked to several other attractions which are close by.

Worth a brief visit to see this lovely cathedral.

The main attraction here are the final resting places of Dom Pedro II, his wife Empress Teresa Cristina, his daughter princess imperial Isabel (who signed the law abolishing slavery in Brazil), and her husband, Comte d'Eu. The church is of the 19th century with the tower finished only in 1969.

This gothic church is open to public visitation and house the tombs of Emperor Dom Pedro and his family. The stained glass windows are specially beautiful with sunlights. Don't miss this fine attraction.

If you came to Rio de Janeiro, looking for sun, beaches, and it is raining ... Go to the nearby city of Petrópolis, in the mountains just outside of Rio, easily reached by car in a little more than one hour. Petrópolis was the Summer capital of the Brazilian Court. The Royal Family enjoyed it's cool weather and beautiful mountains and valleys. The Imperial Cathedral cannot be missed. Its construction, in the famous neogothic style, started in1884 and was completed in 1960. Beautiful glass windows complete the scenary, bringing you to exceptional moments of peace and introspection. The Royal Mausoleum is a must, with the tombs of Brazil's last Emperor, D. Pedro II, and his wife, the Italian Princess, D. Teresa Cristina di Borbone-Due Sicilie. And finally, avoid free-lancer guides. You do not need them. Enjoy!

The cathedral is very well maintained, it is beautiful , and there are the important graves there, extinct ancestors of the Brazilian throne.
