Great views on the drive from Rio. This pink palace was home to the former Royal Family. The Crown Jewels are beautifully displayed. However, bags must be left in lockers and overshoes worn. These can be cumbersome, especially when climbing the stairs. Stay close to your guide, as larger groups cannot easily hear commentary and rooms are small. An experience indeed.

There are many old houses along the central avenue, with water in the middle. Some of the houses are museums, or pousadas. The recent flood damage has been repaired beautifully.

Historical city with amazing urban and architectural monuments. It is an important document of a period of Brazilian history. Nevertheless it hasn't been taken care properly. Except for the Cathedral, which is under restoration, everything is very deteriorated, including the Emperor's Summer Palace.
Nature of the region is astonishing and those who enjoy hiking and visiting national parks will enjoy the surroundings. But the city is not worth visiting.

One can see why the Portuguese Royal Family chose Petropolis as the location for their summer palace. This is a beautiful city in a great setting. We visited the Imperial Palace, the cathedral and the former casino, among other places.

Petropolis is located high in the mountains about an hour or two from Rio. In 1845, Dom Pedro I declared Petropolis his summer home and started construction of the beautiful Imperial Palace (now a museum). He donated land to other nobles so that they could build homes nearby. These mansions make up the centro historico. Best seen on foot -- very safe and comfortable.

It is also close of some nice touristic
points and shops. Try to find a hotel here and you will be able to spend a day here walking through museums and other places.

I went there to visit the former summer palace of Emperor Pedro II, it is a museum now with a log of royal collections. We also went to the Cathedral and Crystal Palace. Good place away from Rio.

Amazing homes and buildings in a very European designed in the mountain tropical rainforest. I was thinking that I was in Portugal or maybe Spain or Italy.

This city is so beautiful it should be in the 10 places to go whilst in Rio as it’s only a hours drive away. The buildings are magnificent it’s like going back in time. Next time we come to Brazil we will come and stay here and take trips down to Copacabana beach plus it was a lot safer here.

Petropolis historical neighborhood is wonderful, for many reasons. Firstly, it is well preserved. Safe, one can walk around and visit the cathedral, where the remains of the last emperor and his wife rest; some old palaces and monuments, such as the former summer imperial palace, now petropolis museum, a wonderful visit though its gardens is also compulsory; the former main avenue, the cristal palace and the santos Dumont house, not far away. Many old palaces and houses, and one can have some idea of how this city used to be in old times. Not to miss!
