I recommend this at the start of your visit to Rio. You will see the city so differently and I think it’s really important to understand the favelas – it’s not all doom and gloom. I emailed Zezinho from NZ and he replied really fast and sent through photos of the station to get off (if the metro is not... More

We booked a tour to go to the largest favela in Brazil (rocinha). We didn't know what to expect at the beginning as it was our first time in a place with such characteristics. However we had a great time meeting the locals. They are very warm people as all the Rio citizens who try the best to make you... More

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic tour. We arranged last minute with Zezinho and he was able to accommodate us without problem. Our guide Freddy, who lives in the favela, was superb. He took us off the main streets that typical tours stick to and we got to see what day to day life is like in the favela.... More

We booked the tour and Freddy our dutch guide was great. It was a fantastic day in the real favela. Better then the tours in jeeps and buses. If i come back i'll do it again.

We joined a 4 hour tour with an English speaking guide (actually a Dutch guy who has lived in the Favela for several years). We had lots of opportunity to ask questions and discuss the reality of life in a favela and the political/social issues around the way Rio is run. It was very interesting to walk through several areas... More

Two friends and I did a tour with Carlos through Rocinha. We were apprehensive about the safety of the favelas however we get very safe walking around the streets and the small alleyways. Carlos was a great guide and explained the ins and outs of life in the favelas. We would highly recommend this tour.

Operated by the locals of Rocinha. Guided by the locals who share with the visitors how they were raised and live in the community with systems which might have been misunderstood by the people outside. Visit and understand favela with Favela Adventures which is run, organised and toured by the locals. All proceeds go back to the locals. PLEASE bring... More

We did a tour with Zezinho's group and it was very informative and interesting. Carlos who is born & bred in the Rocinha favela met us at our apartment and we caught a bus there and proceeded to walk from the top down to the bottom, through narrow alleyways and crowded street. It felt safe and was respectful to the... More

I went on 6 hours tour with tour guide Carlos (actually it took like 7 hours). We met at the metro station in Copa and took a public bus to the favela. I loved this part - travel like a local! We walked favela streets, visited few viewing points, met with Zezinho at his DJ school, had a lunch in... More

A Favela tour is a must do in Rio and our visit with Favela Adventures was great. Our guide Carlos was the sweetest young guy who grew up and live in Rochina. It was such a great (and safe) experience visiting a favela with a local. He would gladly answer every question you had, also the more critical ones, and... More

Staying in Copacabana

Neighbourhood Profile
Copacabana
The rowdy Copacabana is one of the most traditional and old areas from Rio de Janeiro. This neighbourhood is a blend of Brazilian soul - crowded, rowdy and traditional. This neighbourhood has a bit of everything: bars with music, pubs, street fairs, chaotic streets, and many shops. All these things and more live side-by-side. There are options for all price points and tastes. However, the most powerful draw in Copacabana is still the fantastic view of the coast and the incredible beaches.
