Lovely church and convent from the Franciscan times that has been finished in gold leaf... very impressive. Re built after the many invasions of Brazil. Well worth a visit and no charge.

South America is 90-95% Catholic with beautiful churches and cathedrals in every city. There is so much gold in every facility with poor people visiting them. But when Portugal and Spain conquered South America, they were worshiping the sun god. He was always shining like...More

A perfect example fo the Baroque architecture. Gold leaf coverings from floor to ceiling, beautifully preserved. I appreciate the historical value, but was just too much for me personally.

The church is inside a Museum and next to a plainer church. The entrance fee to the museum for a foreigner was R$10. The church is highly decorated with gold leaf and very striking.

This hidden gem is quite impressive, you won't be able to focus on anything because it's all so golden and overloaded, it's crazy beautiful! They charge a small fee to enter and it's usually empty, a wonderful place to visit if you are downtown!

I've got jaw dropped once I arrived in this chapel... it's plenty covered of Golden leaves and pieces, many of them sculpted by Aleijadinho's master, Francisco Xavier de Brito. You will find in the Franciscan Convent of Santo Antônio: three chapels, one of them is...More

The church is beautiful, if you like baroque, so of course it is dark and heavy. The church, although it looks like it is actual gold, it is wood carved gold painted. With all of the wood in the area they used that rather than...More

I know that's a weird title but it's true. The chapel/church is stunning with all the gold. Literally everything but the pews and floors are gilded in gold. Quite a sight to see. However, it's depressing when you think about all the money spent to...More
