Beautiful , clean golden sandy beach. Be careful if you go in the sea, as the Rio currents are very strong. Lots of beach bars. 8km of safe cycle paths adjacent to the beach. Much quieter and less touristy than Copacabana. Quite a few sellers...More
Yes, Copacabana and Ipanema are better known, but only because they are right there in the middle of the city. There are advantages and disadvantages to that. Advantage: well, they are in the city, no reason to commute. Disadvantage: where to start? crowded, polluted, expensive,...More
We stayed at the Grand Hyatt. It is right across the street from the beach. The beach never seemed crowded and the kiosks did not pressure us to stop and drink/eat. We felt very safe at all times of the day. Great experience.
I stayed near here. Far better than Copacabana. Well looked after and plenty of bars for drinks along the front. We cycled it one day and it was lovely. I walked along the beach every day I enjoyed it that much
Less crowds, cheaper, whiter sand... What's not to love? I guess the long metro ride from Copacabana isn't very nice, but at least it's easy to get there. There are kiteaurfing schools here.
No beach volleyball... At least not as much as on the main...More
Stayed for 4 days nearby and went to the beach everyday. Its one of the nicest in Rio, not that far from the more famous Copacabana/Ipanema beaches.
During the week its really quiet and not many people go there, during weekends it gets more people...More

Dear international traveler. Nice question. The experience of going to the beach in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most democratic things that a Human Being can have. This is an everyday activity of Carioca (born in Rio de Janeiro). It happens that the beaches of Rio are frequented by different public, in different social classes and at different times.
Going to the beach is a safe act, no doubt, for a woman alone. However, some basic care is recommended. I listed to you some hints, I guess might help you:
A) Choose a beach that is your style and astral. Copacabana is for Tourist and people who live in the area city with the presence of people more experienced in the habit ( senior beach ) once they are going to the beach every day. Ipanema is a more sophisticated beach in Rio and also use to be for tourists, due the hotels around and you can already see the presence of surfers, young tribes of beautiful people in its left part, known as Arpoador Beach ( Surfer Paradise in Rio ). Perfect for the Sunset. Both, are full of locals residing in the neighborhood and some visitors from other neighborhoods. Already frequented by people more beautiful and that brings in itself, the aesthetic care with being fashion. There are sportsmen presence and many people who are in a higher class. The beach of Leblon follows the same skills but the routine of Ipanema is a little different. at certain points, in Leblon beach there are families, children and babysitters with the babies at morning hours for the light sun. Barra beach is another astral. Another atmosphere. There are sectors of it that there are many sportsmen and surfers, para-sail guys and less tourists presence. Of course you might find because a lot of hotel are there. The presence is more mixed and you can observe people from various regions of the city.
B) Choose a schedule to beach according to your experience with the Sun. Dark skin is mid day. White skin only until 10:00AM or after 04:00PM. Don't hesitate. Go outo of sun if you don't are prepared for it. Is very dangerous. Be sure!
C) Choose to go next to your hotel or residential. Do not think it easy to face a traffic jam after a period of beach. It's something even close to unbearable.
D) Avoid carrying valuables. No jewelry is used on the beaches here. You no need collars or watch anymore. Beach is a place to relax and see beautiful people. Choose comfortable clothes over your bikini and a light shoes for relax a lot. Be sure to bring a beach slipper ( flip-flop ) because the sand is usually hot. A bag with your paraphernalia - sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, beach dress called "canga", towel, biscuits, snacks and a small book are women's habits on the beach.
E) Bringing cell phones is possible, but it requires the care of always to protect it as something of value. It is usually very targeted because of the easy theft.
E.1) Money and Credit Cards is helpful. But not so much. Take if you only the enough amount for a daily stay.
E.2) Copy of your Passport is very helpful. Or have your Drive License as enough Identification document. A card from your hotel is also recommended.
F) To stay at beach, choose a location on the sand, located about 30 meters from the water waves line or above. Note where most are sitting or lying down. follow logic and do as most.
G) If you want a sun shade (highly recommended) and a beach chair, just rent along the rental points, which exist all along the sand line in the waterfront. There you begin to be known if you go to the point every day. The vendors are "barraqueiros", as they are called, usually assemble for the client the tents and the chairs.
H) You can bring mineral water in the plastic bottles and something to eat, bought in some place you trust and from your preference. Avoid is buying and eating fatty products and shrimp and fried foods on the beach. Look for a patty ( empada Carioca ), tremendous Brazilian delight and very regular on the beaches of Rio. Check it out !!!
I) Wear sunscreen! For toilets normally make use of the public toilets inside the Life Stations, all marked by large numbers. Note that all the beaches have a Lifeguard Station. This will be your reference. Pay attention for the existence of the red flag in the beach that signal means dangerous sea with strong waves.
J) If you want to walk along the beach near the surf, you must ensure that your personal belongings are stored and kept it safe with someone you trust or carry them with you.
K) Do not spend many hours at the beach on your first and second days. You will be exhausted and will not be able to walk past the beach. The sun makes people extremely tired. 02-03 hours per day is recommended and be sure, sufficient.
L) The beach is a relax place to go and have fun. Enjoy watching beautiful and ugly people and getting used to being flirted and flirting. Flirting and many relationships have already begun on the beaches, a place that every good and experienced "Carioca" uses to mark their first date when they meet a girl in a bar or nightclub and really want to know what she looks like before she ventures into bed with her.
Well, I guess this hints might help you. Be welcome and enjoy your stay in Rio. Kind Regards. Thiago Pinto
