Go and have a quiet time in the centro. Very respectable library.

for those who walk downtown, this may be a welcome stop to escape the heat and the hustle for a moment. Then you can admire the building and the rare books it protects- kind of a `Harry Potter`experience...where you`d least expect it!

I went here to study some Brazilian history books and found a very helpful group of librarians and a very large amount of other students and scholars very quietly and diligently getting on with their studies. Some really nice details, not just in the architecture and the historic structure, but also when you want a book the librarian will go... More

Located in downtown Rio, close to Praça Tiradentes and Avenida Rio Branco. Amazing architecture, amazing furniture, amazing small book collection, but very important for the story of the world. One of the most beautiful libraries of this world. The library came to Brazil with the Royal family of Portugal, hiding from Spanish invasion by Kind Filipe II.

When we visited the whole place was under construction. As we were not aware of this it was a major disappointment. What was shocking was how exposed the books were during this process. Not even the minimum protection was provided as dirt and dust reigned down on these century old books. At least the exhibit was free. Was this review... More

This is not a must see, but if you happen to be in the area, it is worth checking out. The place is a tiny library, but the wood interior is breathtaking. It is not a place for a long visit. As a library, it is not a good one. It has a medium sized public space, but you cannot... More

In Downtown Rio, Close to Praca Tiradentes and Avenida Rio Branco (local 5th ave.) Amazing architecture, amazing furniture, amazing book collection. No line up, if you like books, and history a must go. Next to the "Camlodrome" a popular market selling cheap Chinese products as well as stolen one. Security in the surroundings is low,but if you had your Cellphone... More

The place is a hidden gem. It's architecture and decorations are fascinating, down to most intricate details. It's maintenance is somewhat lacking, however. When we visited, some maintenance work was being done. So, hopefully, the maintenance will improve. Still, very much recommended.

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
