Benedictine monasteries may be plain on the outside, but they can be spectacular and beautiful on the inside. That is certainly the case with the Chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento at the Sao Bento Monastery. Don't miss going inside this chapel.

Stately exterior which gives no indication of the magnificence of the baroque style interior - gold, gold & more gold covering intricate carvings

Magnificent beauty. But all the money spent covering every inch in thick gold gags me knowing how poor the people are who donated for it.

Attractive, but not too impressive as you walk up to the entrance. Now step inside. There is gold everywhere! High arched ceiling, alcoves and statuary all gilded and gold. It is truly beautiful and will take your breath away. Worth the walk up the hill. Definitely visit if you are in Rio.

On a hill but with recent elevator access, go see this because it is entirely gold leaf inside. It is not very big in size, but makes up for it with the gold leaf covering almost all.

One of the richest churches in Brazil which is part of an old monastery where several benedictine monks live and work. They also run a school which is said to be one of the best of the city.

Worth a visit. Very impressive church interior and everything in it is covered in gold leaf. Our guide took us up to the church level mysteriously via a modern elevator in a modern building, which I think was a school.

A hidden secret so to say. Amazing baroque work and lots of gold. For the brave, mass early on Sunday with Gregorian chants. You do feel close to God somehow!

This is a very old rococo church in downtown Rio Absolutely spectacular. Check times before going there to make sure it's open. A real jewel.

This monastery is very old and our guide explained its history through the use of drawings on the wall and its position relative to Rio as it grew into a city. Very peaceful as well as beautiful - we did not have sufficient time there but it is well worth a visit.

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.
