This quaint bohemian neighborhood of Rio with colonial buildings and cobblestone streets steep on a hillside overlooking the city is earning the interest of tourists wishing to see an alternate Rio away from the beach scene. Art galleries and restaurants add to the local culture of Santa Teresa.

If you want to discover a different aspect of Rio, this place is a must! It's a very characteristic attraction of the old Rio, placed very near to the financial quartier and Lapa. A big variety of colors and music is waiting for you! I really suggest to have a walk during the day starting from the last station of... More

Take a cab and visit this historic site. The steps are lined with geography and art. Take your time and look for your roots, then, take a lot of pictures.

Beatyfully located, Sta Teresa is the place where the artists live and have their ateliers. There are also several good restaurants with a great view over the city

Don't miss a visit in the bohemian neighbourhood of Santa Teresa. where you will small art shops and great cafes and restaurants. It is safe to walk in the streets, but of course do it with care as other places in Rio.

We took a taxi from Copacabana although there is an old cable car that was not running during our late afternoon visit. Its an interesting area of cobbled streets, steep hills and a few pricey restaurants, which prove to be the main attraction with their views down and across the hillsides to the Ocean.

Very, very different from the Copacabana strip - in a good way! Well worth a trip. Old style colourful portuguese houses, cool graffitti, lots of vw beetles. We just carried a casual bag, no jewelry or cameras on display and felt fine safety wise.

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.
