This quaint bohemian neighborhood of Rio with colonial buildings and cobblestone streets steep on a hillside overlooking the city is earning the interest of tourists wishing to see an alternate Rio away from the beach scene. Art galleries and restaurants add to the local culture of Santa Teresa.

Don't miss a visit in the bohemian neighbourhood of Santa Teresa. where you will small art shops and great cafes and restaurants. It is safe to walk in the streets, but of course do it with care as other places in Rio.

We took a taxi from Copacabana although there is an old cable car that was not running during our late afternoon visit. Its an interesting area of cobbled streets, steep hills and a few pricey restaurants, which prove to be the main attraction with their views down and across the hillsides to the Ocean.

Very, very different from the Copacabana strip - in a good way! Well worth a trip. Old style colourful portuguese houses, cool graffitti, lots of vw beetles. We just carried a casual bag, no jewelry or cameras on display and felt fine safety wise.

An Amazing Place to visit in some ways it like time stood still. From Old Style Architecture and some of the best views of the city. Its a shame that the Trolley doesn't run there anymore due to an Accident back in 2011 because it can be a little difficult for elderly people to walk up there. So, if your... More

In Rio de Janeiro, virtually every hill is guesting some sort of shanty town or favela, some of them are relatively safe places to visit, but many other are not. Santa Teresa is probably the only (or one of the very few) neighborhood which is built on a hill and still looks nice and clean. Just avoid very desert steep... More

Staying in Santa Teresa

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.
