I have visited the Teresopolis side of the park several times over my various visits to Brazil. Most recently I hiked to the top of Pedra do Sino (about 14 km hiking from the park entry), which is the highest point in the state of Rio, and stayed two nights at the lodge which is approximately 20 minutes before the peak.
The hike on the way up involves a 3 km walk through the park grounds to the start of the hike where it's a further 11km, which is reasonably steep in all sections besides a few flat stretches. Most of the hike is through dense forest though there are a few waterfalls (water is potable from the second on wards) and some lookouts.
The lodge is a very simple affair with bunk beds and tents for hire (or you can bring your own). There is no linen available and no blankets so you'll have to self-provide (it gets very cold here at night, even during summer). You'll also have to bring your own food as it cannot be purchased. There are basic cooking facilities. Accommodation can be pre-booked online (good luck as the pre-purchase option probably won't work) or at the entry to the park. The park is very busy during winter, especially on weekends, so it's advisable to book ahead at this time of year but outside this period you should be safe just booking upon arrival in the park.
The view from the top of Pedra do Sino is spectacular at sunrise and during the night, when the lights of Rio can be seen. There are also a few other side trips that can be done. Information is available at the lodge.

If you love nature and want to get away from Rio, this park is the perfect place. We rented a car and drove the 90min. or so to the park. The drive into the mountains alone is breathtaking. There is a small fee to enter the park, but that seems only fair considering the current economic times in Brazil. (Tip: the drive from Rio is partly on toll roads, so make sure you have cash on you.)
There is plenty of places to park. The visitors center has a nice set of displays explaining the geological and historical features of the park. They are in English. The maps of the park are not, but we were able to get some advice on what to try and do in one day from one of the parks employees.
This is Brazil. Make sure you have plenty of water with you when you go hiking. We were there in winter when it was in the 60'sF in the morning and 70'sF in the afternoon. It only gets hotter from there.
The trails range in difficulty from very simple walks in the woods, to more extensive hikes up steep hillsides with lots steps made of wood or tree roots. There is even a very cool suspended bridge walk that takes you into the treetops. That one is so flat even child strollers or wheelchairs can go on it.
Word of warning: The Postcard Trail that takes you to the breathtaking views of the orgao rock formations, is very challenging, especially if you have been hiking all day. Try to do that one first if possible. It very steep and though listed as a "moderate" difficulty, we found it to be hard.
Must see if visiting Rio state. The #1 highlight of our two week trip in the Rio area.

The park offers some great hiking and views. I hiked with friends from Teresopolis to Pedra do Sino in December 2014.
We got there by bus from Rodoviaria Novo Rio for about 22R$ one way. The journey took 1.5 hrs and we could get off right at the main gate to the Park, after talking to the driver. Beware, the journey back took almost 4 hours due to bad traffic in Rio.
It took us 5 hours with some minor breaks to get from the Entrance Gate to the top, where a small cottage is located. At that time, the entrance + mountain fee + camping fee + tax amounted to around 44R$ for students and to around 88R$ for full price. You really have to show your student ID if you want that discount. A hot shower at the cottage was for 10 R$, bunk bed for 40R$/night and a place in an empty room for 25R$/night. A basic bathroom/restroom is available for free.
We stayed in a tent, there is a nice place in front of the cottage where you can stay. The hike itself is of higher difficulty, it can also get a bit muddy and cold after sunset. On the other hand you will see interesting flora, a few animals and waterfalls and beautiful views, perhaps sunrise or sunset. We did not meet many other people there, you can pretty much enjoy the place just by yourselves.
Tip: You can get a free map and advice at the Visitor's Centre, located 200m behind the Entrance Gate. There is also a small bistro and shop, although I am not sure whether they also sell grocery. We got our food in the city. The level of English of the employees is very limited.

What a disappointment!
We went to teresopolis just for this park.
-First of all it is disgustingly expensive for foreigners : 25 R
-Then it is not easy to reach the entrance by bus, we had to take a cab after waiting one hour for a bus that never came
-once at the entrance you need to walk along a car road to reach the trails you want to walk, meaning that if you want to walk the one in the LP you need to walk 6 km just on this road (for a 2k trail : nonsense)
==> Without a private car this park is not worth your time. So sad that you need a car in a park!
Not backpacker friendly, maybe good for locals during the weekend but not for foreigners.
Avoid or do a three days trek from teresopolis to petropolis.

The trail to Pedro do Sino was nice and rewarding. It just starts with a payment of 70 reais for foreigners....Why do we have to pay to enter a national park and why pay double the amount locals pay..
In Europe you don't pay to walk in a national park; let alone that foreigners pay more!! A log was made of you entering but you don't receive any routes or documentation. All the money goes to the local and state government. Nothing is invested in the parque itself.
My recommendation. Visit the Floresta da Tijuca Woods for hiking and join nature for free.

A friend and I took a 4 hour round trip walking in the Serra dos Orgaos National Park as we were staying in Teresopolis. The queue to the carpark entrance long when we arrived on a Sunday but that was deceptive as it moved quite quickly and we managed to start walking away from the crowds as they were mostly wanting to swim in the pools near the park car park. We took the Postal trail which was 3-4 hours round trip up and down fairly steep mud trail with occasional steps in the path. A bit slippy after rain. You are rewarded with a spectacular view of Dedo de Deus at the top. Take water and a snack.

The Park has good structure of reception of visitors, a spectacular path between the trees and local vegetation and good choice of natural swimming pool, in addition to good access to cars and parking.

The Teresópolis Natural Park it's a great place to relax in the natural pools or having a picnic, or go hiking with the most different levels of difficulty.
It's also a great place for those who like to make pictures from natural environments and take waterfall bath. In fact, there are several waterfalls to choose!

Have ever been in an untouched tropical forest in Brazil? Located between two very well know mountain cities of Rio de Janeiro (Teresopolis and Petropolis), this National Park offers beauties that you seldom see within a short driving distance from Rio. Waterfalls, pools, creeks, explendid samples of trees and small animals - all gathered in a place that you may stay for some hours or days. If you are an experienced hiker, try the famous Petropolis-Teresopolis trail, a thrilling journey that will put you in the hearth of this Park (it will take 2 or 3 days depending upon your phisical conditions or your will to keep a slower pace). Also climbers will find many options here, as Teresopolis is considered the brazilian capital for mountaineering. The 2 main gates are located in Teresopolis (where the main Administration and small hikes are) or in Nogueira, close to the city of Petropolis. Entrance fees are charged, but they are affordable, in special if you are an student of any nationality (you must have some document to show it). The variety of routes inside this Park are not so well indicated as a foreign may expect, so it is advisable to hire a local guide or join a group to take longer hikes. Rest assured that your investment in time and money will be rewarded with great views and unforgettable experiences in this area. One of the best experiences into the wild when visiting Brazil!

This is a fabulous park and easily accessible from Rio, although I recommend spending a couple of days and staying in Teresopolis. The park has some wonderful rainforest and is part of the Atlantic Rainforest. On our visit we saw humming birds, monkeys, parakeets, orchids and bromeliads...as well as lots of things I could not name.
The park is easy to access. The bus marked Alto stops about 15 minute walk from the park entrance. There are three trails near to the visitor centre that you can easily walk in a day. For a long hike head for the Pedra do Sino trail. This is a 22km round trip talking about 4 hours to reach the top of the highest mountain. If you take on this walk get a taxi from Teresopolis to the start of the trail and aim to be there by 0800 (taxi about 30 Real). It is a wonderful walk and stunning views of Rio and the mountains from the top.
There is a park entrance fee and an extra fee for the long trails such as Pedra do Sino. The park does a lot of work maintaining the trails so the fee is worth it.

Realmente é distante , aconselho fazer os 2 trajetos de carro. Vá para uma cidade e depois va para outra ; ambas de carro . devido a distancia entre elas.
