We visited this reserve as part of a day tour with Tourturist from San Padro. The site had been well adapted for tourists so you get a really good view of the birds and lagoons with spoiling the environment and this unique landscape. There are other birds and wildlife around the lagoon.

We drove to the park from San Pedro and especially enjoyed watching the flamingos. I had never seen such a salty landscape before.

Wow - spent a lovely late afternoon in Chaxa walking around the salt lake and watching the flamingos. Conaf has an exhibition and picnic facilities in the area with access to toilets. The scenery is just awesome.we went in the late afternoon - drove there ourselves in an ordinary small car. The flamingos are beautiful and the sunset stunning. Treat... More

Spectacular view on the lagunas and their flamencos. Nature has impressive colours of an intensity I was unfamiliar with. The birds in their natural habitat are impressive to see. The views are even more spectacular thanks to the strong light giving the shades an extra dimension.

Was encouraged by all the chat about 'masses of flamencos - in actual fact we found out that since they have stepped up Lithium mining on the other side of the salt flats not that many birds are now coming and also the nesting sights are protected so you don't get anywhere near to them It's not a complete waste... The Salar de Atacama is the third largest salt flat on the earth and sometimes looks as wild and plain as a landscape on planet mars, but then you take a turn and end up seeing flamingos. It is a wonderful experience!

Plan to spend two hours once you get here. You may, or may not, have the flamingoes near as you walk, so definitely bring binoculars. It is a flat, easy walk, but you may want to hire a guide. The signage is v good.
