A powerful statue in splendid isolation

This statue has that communist era bold statement look about it but also some old time superstition which involves rubbing the toe for luck or something like that!

The statue of Grgur Ninski in Varazdin is one of three sculptures of this Croatian bishop; one is in Split and one in Nin. Ivan Mestrovic, a famous Croatian artist, made the sculpture and gave it to the city of Varazdin in 1931.

Just an ordinary statue like everywhere else in the world. He vas bishop in Nin, three statues exist, and legend says if you make a wish and grab him for a toe thumb, your wish will come true. Most popular of statues is in Split.

Ivan Mestrovic is leading Croatian sculptor and we proudly compare his work with that of great August Rodin. Mestrovic has made three sculptures of Grgur, the bishop of Nin. The most popular sculpture is in Split, the smallest is in Nin, and the third one is here in Varazdin, in front of Franciscan church.

A sub par statue in the middle of the city square. It's okay to take photos next to, and is in the middle of a LOT of Ingress portals if you're into that sort of thing, but other than that, you won't miss anything if you skip it, even if you're interested in its history.

Grgur Ninski's statute is real cynosure in town of Varazdin for its interesting tale. Its informed that touching the thumb of his feet would bestow happiness and luck...perhaps we are lucky to be in Varazdin in the first instance....

Gregory of Nin (Croatian: Grgur Ninski ) was a medieval Croatian bishop of Nin who strongly opposed the Pope and official circles of the Church and introduced the national language in the religious services after the Great Assembly in 926, according to traditional Croatian historiography. Until that time, services were held only in Latin, not being understandable to the majority... More
