Best advice: stay at Mikeno Lodge the night before and book the overnight gear from them. I booked all transfers and the gear on the visitvirunga.org website. In their backpack was a sleeping bag plus fleece liner, a poncho, jacket and fleece top. They also provided 4 litres of water per person and a packed lunch in the backpack, which... More

I'm an avid traveler and have seen a lot of incredible places around the world, but the Nyiragongo volcano ranks as one of the top experiences for me. Being in the Virunga NP is exciting to begin with, but then doing this rigorous hike up the volcano, and then experiencing this amazing natural phenomenon once you get to the top... More

My wife and I made the climb up Nyiragongo on November 2nd, 2016, as part of our honeymoon. When planning the trip, we were naturally concerned about the security situation in the DRC, and ultimately it was the overwhelmingly positive reviews on TripAdvisor and the “Virunga” documentary on Netflix that convinced us to take a chance. It ended up being... More

Very nice trekking, perfectly organized by the Virunga NP. Incredible views and unique feelings at the top of the volcano. In case you do this at the rainy season, do not forget your waterproof equipments to protect your stuff. Shelters are fine and rangers friendly. Just amazing !

I made the trip with 2 friends on September 26, 2016. After 5hrs trekking up the summit we were rewarded with a breath taking viwe of the Lake Kivu, the Lava Lake and Goma. There was quite some volcanic activity reminding me of the last part of the Lord of the Ring movies. ICCN guards were great and the meal... More

We had a great tour to hike up the Nyiragongo volcano. We booked it through Matoke Tours, and we had pick up and drop off from Kigali. Everything went smoothly on the Rwanda-Congo boarder as they had organized us visa prior the trip. I would recommend to hire a porter and maybe walking stick for the hike, if you don't... More

The climb is challenging but feasable if you keep a moderate pace. Hiking sticks are strongly recommended as well as warm clothing .

Hiking Nyiragongo is tough (especially going down!), but the views will take your breath away. The huts at the crater rim help keep you warm at night and are completely water-proof. Make sure to pack a change of clothes in a waterproof bag inside your backpack and also to bring along rain gear, it can really rain for long periods... More

After weeks of planning our visit began from Mikeno Lodge in Rumangabo where we spent the night after visiting the Gorillas nearby (see ‘Gorillas in DRC’). We left just after 8am and travelled back down the road towards Goma for about an hour before turning off to the base station where Tresor introduced us to our guide for the next... More
