have you seen such a sight! Standing on the rim of the Nyiragongo caldera after a gruelling 5 hour hike up a more than 30% grade you will be faced head on with the realization of what the earth actaully is and you will be awed, humbled and astounded at the world's largest lake of molten lava bubbling, twisting, forming... This is an amazing hike. The guides are wonderful and the food at the top is also really good. We loved the shelters at the top. Views are awesome. I can't say anything negative this hike. The one thing though is people need to think long and hard about this hike. My wife and I hike pretty often in the... More

The hike itself is almost worth the money in my opinion (beautiful vegetation and then bare volcanic rocks above the clouds). And when you get to the crater and you'll never question the money you paid, your lack of organisational skills, the freezing temperatures or the effort it took to get up there again! It is honestly one of the... More

It's a pretty tough hike, but worth every step. Took us about 6.5 hours (you'll walk at the pace of your slowest climber) Divided into sections so you can stop for food/drinks etc. Mainly walking on loose lava rocks, which is hard going. Hire a porter, it's worth the money. We had overnight packs, food and a cook supplied by... More

Just climbed the active volcano, Mount Nyiragongo (3470 m) to watch the amazing lava lake at the summit in Congo. The volcano erupts a few times very century (last in 2002 when it destroyed the city of Goma).

Till now arranged tour for over 100 individuals for Nyiragongo volcano (with largest live lava lake). Every single tourist on return remarked 'a once in a life time experience and a must visit'. Was honored to host World's famous Indian scientist Mr T N Suresh Kumar (in pictures) and General Mgwebi and his family on the Christmas day of 2016.... More

I went up the volcano on Nov 16th to stay the night. It is well worth the experience and the view is extremely unique. The is hike is quite difficult, especially if you do not hike very often. I booked the tour as part of a bigger package through Amahoro tours: They were quite good, I recommend them and Nicholas... More

I'll put it this way; I stepped away from my camera rigs after 20 minutes so I could watch the spectacle without the distraction of trying to capture the memory for posterity. The hike up the slopes to get to the rim was not much different from all the other mountains I have been to so the lava lake had... More

Best advice: stay at Mikeno Lodge the night before and book the overnight gear from them. I booked all transfers and the gear on the visitvirunga.org website. In their backpack was a sleeping bag plus fleece liner, a poncho, jacket and fleece top. They also provided 4 litres of water per person and a packed lunch in the backpack, which... More

I'm an avid traveler and have seen a lot of incredible places around the world, but the Nyiragongo volcano ranks as one of the top experiences for me. Being in the Virunga NP is exciting to begin with, but then doing this rigorous hike up the volcano, and then experiencing this amazing natural phenomenon once you get to the top... More
