Lake Cuicocha is one of most beautiful lakes in the world. Two islands rise up from the depths in the middle of the lake. You can take a boat ride around the lake and in between the two islands. On a clear day you will be rewarded with stunning views of Cotacachi Volcano. Nearby is a first class visitor center,... More

The scenery is unparalleled. We just loved the boat ride and watching volcanic bubbles pop up around the canoe.

Don't be fooled; this is a long hike (8 miles) It will take 5 hours to complete unless you are in great shape. However, the hike is spectacular with jagged peaks above and a lovely lake below. There are a lot of steep stairs in both directions. We walked counter clockwise and felt it was the best choice. Winds can... More

This is a way to see what volcanos can do and what is left after a large eruption. The boat ride helps get you around the lake and see where the gas still seeps out of the lake's bottom. The hike around is not too strenuous, but the altitude can be difficult if you are not adjusted.

You need to go early in the morning and do the boat tour. That is what we heard is the best from the locals. We got there in the later afternoon and it poured down rain on us. It was still fun to start the trail. Also you may want to arrange for transportation.

Hike starts next to the main gate to the park. We took a taxi from next door village after traveling there by bus from Otavalo. Taxi cost was $5, bus cost us $1.5 for us both. On the way back we took a taxi all the way to Otavalo which took us back $10. Hike was amazing and a bit... More

This would be 5 stars but you cannot find a peaceful place to enjoy this serene mist covered laguna with an island n the middle because there are hawkers everywhere of everything from cds to textiles to boat rides and two hotels and restaurants in your way. Not a place for peaceful kayaking.

Laguna Culcocha (which mean Guinea Pig Lake in Quichua) is rather spectacular. It's possible to walk all around the lake but as that takes several hours, we opted for a short walk to catch good views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There's a simple but interesting information center onsite also. It is definitely worth a visit if you're in... More

The lake fills the top of an old volcano. The boat ride (in Spanish) Gives interesting information and a scenic trip. At the end you are treated to a warm drink of traditional spirits. Reservations recommended.

We rode horses from Cotacach to the Laguna, which is stunning. Didn't have time for the hike, but understand it is wonderful
