About
Located in Ninh Binh province 100 km southeast of Hanoi, Hoa Lu and Tam Coc are two of the most picturesque spots in all of the north. For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water.

Very helping staff, our guide Bao was extremely nice and funny, and managed for us to still have a beautiful day despite a violent storm! The journey is rather well planned, we get to see and do a lot of stuff in just one day. Would definitely recommend for short-stay people.

This is a beautiful boat ride. We went in July so it looked not like rice fields at all, everything was green. There are lots of tourists doing this one. We were a couple and got our own boat. Luckily we had 3 days in Ninh Binh so could do several things. Don't go too late as there will be shadows everywhere from the setting sun. I loved this boat ride but liked the one at Trang An even better.

I was part of a tour which had the two hour boat ride preselected. I was so glad it was the last activity of the trip since I used up quite a bit of energy climbing up the mountains by Mua Caves. Our group was split into groups of threes but the boat could fit up to four (maybe five or six depending on the size of the child). Everyone was required to wear life vests but as we cruised the river not everyone had them on after they left the dock.

These were metal boats and my only complaint was that my butt was tired from all that sitting. Nicer if some padding was available.

There was a pattern in how we had to sit in the boat and our rower got a little excited when we shifted out of our position for any length of time.

Apply lots of sunscreen, use sunglasses and wear a hat or take an umbrella if you are on the afternoon boat rides as the sun got pretty intense.

Be amazed by the feet rowing prowess of your guide. It was a lot of effort to row three grown men around.

The scenery was quite amazing and beautiful. I could see why Kong Skull Island had chosen this area as one of it shooting locations.

Snack boats were available at the turnaround point. Prices were not cheap but a cold drink and fruit was good after the first hour in the sun.

Remember to tip generously at the end.

I understand why people name it Halong Bay territory. Impressing site. The boat take 90min so a bit long as it is not super comfortable if tou have long legs and back issue.

I guess the only silver lining to this dreadful Covid affair is that we were the only boat when we went "foot rowing" through the "three caves valley" in Tam Coc. In normal times there are dozens at the time. It is a peaceful experience through a very picturesque landscape. Worth the excursion.

I did a boat tour in Tam Coc during my 1 day private tour with Chookies tours. They recommended Tam Coc because it is shorter (1,5h - private 2 person boat) than Trang An (3-4h

We did the Tam Coc Boat Tour through the three caves. The scenery was beautiful and the boat driver was very kind. The tour for 2 of us in a boat was 390,000 VND

Beware of the “market” after the last cave. They try to sell snacks and drinks, and if you refuse they will suggest you buy one as a tip for your driver. Although we were happy to do so, we are not sure this was actually beneficial to our driver as he did not pick what he wanted nor did he drink the drink.

Also note that the drivers expect a tip on this tour. We had no problem with this, but tipping is not customary in most places in Vietnam so this is something to keep in mind.
