Anjar has the ruins of a former Umayyad city. Anjar means running water. It is near Baalbek. The town is based on Roman City planning. Two large avenues - the Cardio Maximus and Decumanus Maximus divide the city into four quadrants.
I enjoyed walking around and seeing the ruins. It is not as impressive as some of the other places such as Baalbek but definitely worth a visit.

This is another good place to stop if you are in the area. There are some amazing ruins here. We stopped here for about 45 minutes on the way to the Baalbek ruins and found it to be worthwhile. The shops out front by the entrance also have some great souvenirs.

Nice place to visit. Guide gave good explanation of the history and description of the ruins . Cute little souvenir shop just outside. Toilets available too!

This UNESCO site is pretty high up with nice mountain views at a distance. It is also close to Syria. It is quite a big area so needed around an hour or more here. This city is founded in the 8th century. Some of the ruins are still pretty well preserved. Have to come earlier to beat the crowd.

The reason for my visit to Lebanon was to visit ruins and you cannot ignore these, right next to the Syrian border. This ancient city is reasonably well preserved and the visit is very pleasant for an hour or two.

It is not Baalbeck but it is absolutely charming place to visit. It is not an accident that Anjar is at the Unesco list. I would recommend securing around 1,5h for a walk around the ruins. It is worth taking a guide as you may learn a lot about the history of the place. In the winter season it is quite windy so wrap yourself up.

if you get a chance to visit do so. we went in January so were suplied with plastic bags to cover shoes - however very cold this time of year so wrap up.

Vast area with impressive ruins allowing for a great walk around the grounds. A bit overshadowed by the massive temples of Baalbek nearby, yet absolutely worth a stop.

Usually tourists do this trip along with a visit to Baalbek temple in the Bekaa valley. It was a pleasant day to visit the ruins of Anjar. There was a ticket to purchase to visit the ruins. Interesting, Syria is just across the hill range from here. There is one free standing building structure and a columned facade. Mostly, the ruins are remains of a small city. It takes an hour to walk to all the sites. There are many signs with information about the ruins and it is in English too. After a visit to this site, you can visit the nearby Al-Shams restaurant for a good Lebanese meal.

We visited Cardo Maximus and found it really interesting to walk around the premises and imagine what the place looked like hundreds of years ago. The information on site is not that great.
