This is an incredibly scenic hike with an amazing view on top! Even on a cloudy day, this is still a great hike because the terrain constantly changes. We were lucky and got rewarded with a view when we got to the submit. Be mentally...More

We have hiked many a volcano whilst in Central America (pacaya, acetanago etc) and this is definitely the toughest. Although it isn't very tall (at 1600m), hence altitude isn't a factor, the terrain and steepness make it hard! We went up the southern side of...More

While on Ometepe I hiked both volcanos and although there was no view becuase of the clouds at top of Concepcion it was the better out of the two and you do get good views on the way down after the clouds clear. The vegetation...More

Absolutely exhausting hike but very satisfying with amazing views from the top. It is stifling hot at the base and lower slopes but as you rise towards and above the clouds it can get very cold, especially if you are sweating from the humidity as...More

Trekked this volcano with 10 others. Very very tough hike with a cloudy summit meaning no view was had. Wouldn't recommend unless you are really into hiking. Guides generally available from hostels for $15 per person

I didn't have the best conditions when I walked up the volcano as it was very cloudy but I still enjoyed the hike through the jungle. Wear good shoes because the hike down can be very slippery.

I hiked Concepcion as part of a guided tour with the park rangers organised by Hostel Life is Good. I was recommended by the hostel to take lots of snacks + lunch and at least 3 litres of water for the trek. We had to...More

I had read many reviews etc. about hiking Concepcion. It's the harder of the two volcanos, and very challenging. I'll be fine, is what I thought. This was perhaps one of the most challenging things I've ever done, and definitely the craziest thing I have...More

Can you hike this in normal sneakers or should you invest in proper hiking shoes?

It depends! If you are planning on going right to the top, you need proper hiking shoes. The section above the look-out-point is steep, rocky and covered in little ball-like bits of lava that make it hard work. If you only... More
