About
Spanjola, or the Upper Fortress, gained its present look during the short rule of the Spanish in the mid-XVI century. Owing to its dominant position, it played a key strategic role in the defence of Boka for a long time. During the II World War, it served as a prison for a while.

Nice views

The fortress offers some nice views over the city and the sea. The fortress is located near the main road, with just a small signboard directing to it.

Not the easiest place to find....there is the odd small sign....it is above the town and very stiff walk. We walked straight in and no one was at the entrance. The walls are complete and you can walk around the tops of the walls. The inside contaons several ruined buildings none of which have roofs. All the buildings are derelict and fairly overgrown. The paths are rough and some are in a poor state. Apart from a couple of large turrets there is nothing to go in.....all very forlorn and used as grazing for several loud goats when we were there.

Personally the Forte Mare and Kanli Kula are enough - unless you are a history buff.

Amazing place with Montenegro spirit and no people around. Great view on the sea on one side and mountains on the other.

Amazing views!

Fun climb to the top with an easy walking path. The fortress is definitely something to see and worth the climb. The views are incredible!

Not worth

The view it's nice but not breathtaking. You can see almost the same from other fortresses. If you have car it would be much easier but if you consider going there on foor, better not.

Cozy path up the mountainside, relatively expensive entrance
Aug 2017 • Couples
Beautiful view of Hvar and the sea, with a very smooth and cozy path up the mountainside. Don't see why the entrance costs 40Kn per person though.

Great views from 16th century fortress
Jul 2017 • Family
It's a short but strenuous hike up the steps to Fortress Spanjola, Herveg Novi's "upper" castle. The structure is well preserved and it's easy to climb around and get views out to the Adriactic and into the Bay of Kotor. The middle part has been turned into a small amphitheatre where plays and musical productions are put on. It is a spectacular setting but it does detract from the historical elements of the fort. Entrance fee is 2 euros.

A fortress with terrific views across the mouth of the Bay of Kotor. Converted into a theatre the authenticity of the castle ruins have been compromised but are still well worth a visit. The guardian attempted to sell my girlfriend rental cars and tours to Dubrovnik during our visit. Very enterprising use of his position.

Nice view point

Nice walk to the top of Hvar. A must for all photographers and lovers of panoramic view points. Although reachable by coach I strongly recommend the walk through the pittoresk streets.

Avoid inless you have soft spot for less visited places
Sep 2016 • Couples
The view from the fortress is very nice but it doesn't make up for the effort to get here. The fortress is not prepared for visitors and seems to be a hungout for youngsters.
