About
Destroyed several times in the devastating earthquakes and battles, and finally tumbled into the sea by the catastrophic earthquake in 1979, today only the ruins of the walls remind of its presence. It is also known under the name Mezaluna, built on the walls of the former lower town.

We loved the views from there, as well as the views of it. The wall is impressive, and the montenegro flag on top add to its beauty

Today just ruins, partly taken by the sea. It was seriously damaged and tumbled down during the earthquake of 1979. Today it is a nice place to walk around. There is something fascinating and terrifying to see such old massive constructions subdued by nature. The site is seriously lacking some information, but this goes for many of the sights in Montenegro. Still enjoyable.

At the top of the town and overlooking it, the fortress gives great views over the bay and the town.
Admission in June 2018 was just 2 euro, which I think is good value.
Lots of ramparts to walk around.
A bonus is that there are free toilets inside!
It serves as an outdoor venue as well - a bit like a Roman amphitheatre.
I call it Kanli Kula, rather than the citadel.
There are the remains of a cittadella down by the promenade.

This was for me the highlight of my visit to a town that was otherwise if I am honest rather uninspiring. The Citadel can be accessed via either the main road near the bus station or via the Old Town. Others have mentioned uneven steps and a steep climb - I found neither of these so can only surmise that I must be fitter and more agile than they are! A few more signs telling you the history of this place would not go amiss, although I must admit that the views are good. It is worth the entry fee to see the amphitheatre alone which would be a great location for a play or performance.

The Venetian-era Citadela was one of the most important points of the city's fortification system. This former fortress was destroyed and rebuilt several times (mainly because of battles and earthquakes) throughout the years. Unfortunately, this mighty seafront fortress with huge walls was almost entirely destroyed due to the earthquake in 1979. Sadly, the site never was restored. The small ruins and a stone bridge are located on the popular pedestrian street (Šetalište Pet Danica), close to the fortress Forte Mare (Frequently, liable to be mistaken for each other). Nowadays, it lies more in the sea than on the ground. Regardless of it size, it provides a scenic views. Lots of photo ops. It'd great if there would be a project of reconstruction since it's a historical building. Overall, great location. Wonderful surroundings. Beautiful views. Close to other sights, restaurants, cafes and more. Definitely, worth a visit.

Visited in the afternoon and the view is fantastic. The theatre here would be a great place to see a play with the sun setting in the background. The entrance from the old town has some uneven steps.

My husband and I visited the Citadel whilst exploring Herceg Novi. As mentioned previously, not a great deal to see in the Citadel but excellent views. We thought the entrance fee was too much and should be no more than a couple of Euros each
This attraction would be difficult if you have walking difficulties as lots of steps and rough terrain /cobbled streets and uneven steps

Not much to see from a historical point of view, but for sure worth a stop over. Nice view of the city. entrance fee should be a little less

From the main road skirting around Herceg Novi you'd probably wonder what there is to see here. However, it is definitely worth a stop off to find and explore the little historical nugget of the old town (Stari Grad).
You can walk around the fortress (1 euro entrance fee) and soak up the atmosphere wondering the streets and alleyways of the old town.
