Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

Incredible cultural learning experience. My young children learned so much about Buddhism and Sri lankan tradition in Buddhism.

I felt a bit of an intruder in the temple since I am only a tourist traveller and not religious at all. The temple is however, most active in its religious function and deserves respect of non believers who are visiting. Now, it feels a quite strange to witness the ceremonies through a camera lenze while at the same time... More

I was lucky to have been escorted around the temple, the architecture and paintings were impressive. after presenting my offering (flowers) to the monk, and viewing the relic Tooth, I was taken to view another part of the temple to view the story behind the tooth and its value to the people of Sri Lanka. A truly calming experience which... More

Firstly, make sure you wear clothes where your shoulders and knees are covered and you have shoes that you can easily slip on and off. Secondly, if you're claustrophobic or don't like being in crowds( like Xmas sales) then this is not the place for you! Lastly, if you are allergic to bees then don't go- there are lots of... More

During our visit we were able to observe the evening ceremony at the temple. Difficult to see since there were crowds of Buddhist tourists. However, we tried taking pictures over the heads of onlookers.

The majority of people there when we went were actually pilgrims. You have to show great respect and not wear uncovered shoulders or shorts as it is a religious place. You can see babies being blessed old and young people all very devotional. There is a Buddhist museum worth visiting. A must see in Sri Lanka We managed to hit... More

This was the first temple we've visited at Sri Lanka. Of course it has his own style and differs a lot from temples in China or other buddist countries. We were there on Saturday and the place were full with locals. The entrance for tourists is not free of charge as it is for locals. And from my own point... More

This is an exciting active Buddhist temple, which is an important pilgrimage site. We timed our visit for one of the times during the day when there is a puja and the shrine is opened for viewing. Chanting and drumming announce the beginning of the puja. You enter the first floor where the drumming occurs, then go upstairs to the... More
