Amazing to tell the least
Apr 2021 • Family
This is known as the most beautiful and well preserved vatadageya complex in Sri Lanka. You can see plenty of vatadageya structures in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa ancient kingdoms. But none is as beautiful or preserved as this.
Since it is located but away from Polonnaruwa ancient ruins , not many people visit here. But this is worth to visit. Recommended to visit in early mornings or late evenings as it is very hot in day time. We went close to noon and it was very hard to walk on those stone foot paths as well.

Looks small, but huge

This is located near by Polonaruwa, starred dating back to over 2000 years and sprayed over 100 acres.
Other main feature of Monastery is a hospital that was quite advanced.

You need at least a half day to visit all. But avoid hot 🔥 sunny time. Free to enter but charge a little for parking. Please don't damage anything and don't litter when you visiting.

Interesting

Interesting, but really not much to see. Other tourists were very busy taking selphies, which rather spoil the scene.

Very hot going in mid day, so maybe go when it is more cloudy or early in the morning :) Recommend that you go along with Wikipedia (better than some of the guides)

In my week-long in Sri Lanka I didnt feel pestered by touts and salespeople, but here I met a couple.

World Heritage site- A must visit
Sep 2019
This is a world heritage site and a must visit in Polonnaruwa. Well preserved site. All the ruins are in one location and it is easy to walk around from one ruin to the other. Highly recommend taking a guided tour

A place in my mind

Situated in north western province, in Polonnaruwa district. About 15 km from Hingurakgoda. It's an ancient place of worship.

Visit to Medirigiriya Vatadage
May 2019 • Friends
Medirigiriya vatadage is a very famous ancient building built in pre Christian times later restored by the Department of Archeology.

It’s a building which completely houses a Stupa.

Once it was hidden behind the thick jungles and found by Mr HCP Bell in 1897. Now it’s fully restored to its full architectural beauty by the enthusiastic Archeologists.

It is surrounded by few other buildings including an old hospital.
