If you are looking to soak in the culture of Chennai, the Mylapore Tank and Mandavali area should be at the top of your list. One of the oldest residential parts of Chennai, the tank is a part of the seventh century Kapaleeshwarar Temple. This is also the place where the famous Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar, was born. If you are spending a few days in Chennai, you will understand the importance of this state figure from the number of references made in signs, names of shops and statues. The quintessential travel phrase, "overwhelming sights, sounds, smells," fits perfectly in this area. The narrow streets around the temple are buzzing with activities. Flower sellers, archaic shops selling temple offering ingredients and such line the roads leading to the temple. A photographer’s dream, this place is best explored in the morning, the chosen time to pay homage at the temple.

All know about Mylapore for its famous Siva temple- Karpagambal Samedha Kapaleeswarar Temple. But my interest now, Mylapore Festival - being organised by a corporate and few good Samaritans in and around Mylapore. Since Mylapore is always Mylapore-for its unique ambience and culture. I visited this Mylapore Festival on 8th Jan,2017 Sunday. This festival is from 5th to 8th Jan... More

Visited the temple in the morning. There are 2 options for payed darshan for quick visit of rs 50 and rs 100 available from counter inside temple. There is also a shoe counter to safely keep footwear outside ran by the temple. Don't go to local vendors for that.

Mylapore is a residential area in the South of Chennai. Once called the Brahmin Lawyers district, it is now a mix of industrialists, film producers, artistes and professionals. Recently, there has been an influx of residents from the small towns because of better employment opportunities. Traffic can be horrendous with huge SUVs and such vehicles. Air Pollution is under control... More

The presiding deity of Madras always had been Lord Kapaleeshwar, an excellent temple worth visiting any number of times. The presence of temple in the area initiated settling of the educated but not necessarily rich elite centuries back the locality. This in turn had converted the place in to sort of cultural cradle of Madras city. However, it has lost... More

Mylapore, a part of chennai is very old and has a rich heritage. Known for its Kapaleeswarar temple, this place has transformed itself to retain its ethnic charms with a blend of modernity. The streets around the temple are a delight to walk and experience the local culture, shopping and taste the variety of local cuisine. The temple tank is... More

Visited Chennai recently and had gone to the Kapaleshwar Temple at Mylapore - which is busy but organised - police uncles are found and traffic is controlled.. It was a bit funny when I read the boards stating Mylapore else the way the uber driver was spking it sounded as Mahilapur :)

Nice area in Chennai with the Mylapore temple and the Ramakrishna temple nearby. A lot of ships and small restaurant in the small streets around the temple. Mylapore is one oldest area of Chennai and had kept his authenticity.
