The fort is in pretty good shape for being over 150 years old. You can walk in almost all parts of it. There are buildings in the center of the fort still and the walls are in good shape. There is a walking tour you can take and it's self-guided which is nice. The workers are nice and knowledgeable about... More

Although we did not tour this fort, we did stop and look around. It was evident that Fort Gaines was kept up better than Fort Morgan which we toured the day before. We were told it was because Fort Gaines is privately funded. If we had known there were two forts, we would have waited and toured this one but... More

Another Fort, but this one feels more like a tourist trap. Couple of cannons out front. The piece of the ship they found from the storm out front is interesting.

We went to the Fort twice during our visit. First time to tour which was very interesting and worth the $8.00 fee to get in. You are given directions around the Fort with numbers and descriptions of the stops. Second time was for a Renaissance Reenactment. The reenactment seemed a little disorganized and you really couldn't see much of the... More

This is a good place to visit if you like historical sites. The fort is well preserved allowing you to go into several of the buildings. There is a nice small museum with artifacts that help explain the history of the fort. As you walk around the upper part of the fort where the cannons are, you have a nice... More

First time I have done a history tour. I really enjoyed it. It was a self guided tour. That is nice cause you can take your time. They have it all opened up so you can really explore. I enjoyed the blacksmith.

If you're on the island, swing by. If not, probably not worth the extra trek from Mobile unless you're doing this with some other visits on the island.

We enjoyed touring the fort. It is very well kept and interesting. It is a self guided attraction and the give you a pamphlet of information as you enter. There are number points of interest and information about each point is listed on the pamphlet. I'd rather see signage than have to keep up with the pamphlet. Overall, we like... More

The last trip we toured Fort Morgan, so this time we took the ferry across to Dauphin Island to tour Fort Gaines and look around the island. It was a good day trip. There is not a lot of difference between the two forts, although Fort Gaines does have a blacksmith working onsite. It was in the mid 80s degrees... More
