Unique community

Few small museums can boast of first class displays and very knowledgable host/docents to tell the story of an interesting community like Fairhope. I may get to go again.

Every aspect of the local history is covered on both floors of the original town hall building (once mayor's office, police dept., jail, and fire dept. all together), including a garaged working 1935 fire engine and a "people's train" car reproduction outside. Photos, videos and display cases contain explanations and memorabilia of living here over the decades. I never knew... More

You have got to stop at this museum. The director is so personable and lively. He drew us into this place which I fell in love with. The museum is the old jail and firehouse which you can still see. There are displays which walk you through the history of this single tax community.

The local guides have so much pride as they tell you about the history of this community. Make sure you visit both floors and the fire station.

This is the old firehouse and jail. There still is a period firetruck in the garage and the jail cells are still as inviting as they were back in the day when they really housed guests. There are many and varied exhibits dealing with Fairhope's mayors, history and culture. This is a wonderful way to spend a hot afternoon (due to... More

Surprised to learn that in Fairhope (one of only two single-tax communities left in the U.S.) women have been allowed to vote since the community was founded in 1894. Museum docents were very helpful and knowledgeable. Definitely worth a visit.

You will enjoy stopping here to get a solid history of the area. The guide was great and very informative. I had to convince the others in the party to stop but are they glad we did. A do not miss!

Located right across the road from the Hampton Inn and in the middle of everything. They museum documents the history of Fairhope very well. Lots of old photographs, memorabilia, and artifacts. The displays are nicely done and the staff are very friendly and helpful. They have a small gift shop, of course, and even sell a tea that is grown... More

For several years, while visiting, I would sit across the street at my hotel and wondered what was in this building. On one visit, a man came across the street to get his coffee, and we struck up a conversation. He invited me to go visit. This was the best place to see if you are here. There are many... More
