A most excellent travel experience! Guides Christine and Chelsea led us to three food spots to sample all manner of taste treats. The water snake was the most animated, the winter melon pastries the most sublime. Wouldn't want to sell the lamb skewers, garlic scallops or China beers short.

Great tour that cannot be missed. Seafood, then lamb kebabs and some Szechuan spice to finish. Special thanks to Giulia for being a great guide who really does enjoy showing people around

Our guide was a Chinese speaker from Mexico which gave us an unfiltered view of China and how the country has been changing dramatically over the past 10 years. We ate a TON of food - definitely worth the price - and drank a lot too including local fire water. I never thought I would eat river snake but it... More

We only had a couple of days in Shanghai and as we are foodies checking out the food scene was important to us. Our tour guide was Giulia, an Italian living in Shanghai, and she spoke perfect English. We were five people in the group and under Giulia's leadership we quickly became acquainted and never stopped talking (except to eat).... More

We ate at three restaurants and had a nice walk through the street of Shanghai between stops. Tour guide Topher has great energy and lots of knowledge about the city. Great hosts, and a great group. Would do again, very glad to have taken this tour!

My wife and I were part of a small group of people (8 from 3 continents) led by David, an American living and working in China for over 6 years and speaking the local language. At the end of my two weeks in China I still think the tour was the best evening I had: nice company, a lot of... More

We're so glad you felt that your time David on our Night Markets tour gave you the confidence and knowledge to master the Shanghai street food scene on your own - that has always been our ultimate aim! Looking forward to eating with you again soon in SH or Beijing. More

Tour guide spoke perfect English, was energetic and was able to answer pretty much anything we could throw at him. Food choices were varied and interesting. Would certainly recommend this to anybody visiting Shanghai. Do it on the first night you are there so you have a good idea of foods for the rest of your visit.

Truly a great night! We had a large international group of 25 people on the tour and our four guides (lead by Rose and Andreas) could not have been more helpful and a real pleasure to spend the evening with. Dietary requirements and special drink requests were handled promptly making sure that everyone’s needs were met. Having guides that are... More

Topher and Christine did a great job organizing 3 sit-down visits to night market type cuisine. Short walks between each gave the food time to settle! They gave interesting information about history, ingredients, etc etc. We had a great time while learning a lot. Highly recommended.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
