Memorable, the best old street in Shanghai!
Aug 2019
Yuyuan old street has successfully preserved its architecture in distinctly Chinese style while constantly pulled in endless streams of tourists to visit. Its vast space and countless number of stores prove irresistible for souvenirs-hunting shopaholics, given its wide variety of fanciful memento to possibly acquire. This is also one of the most vibrant old streets where shopping mingles with eating, thereby creating the perfect experience to unwind. Bargaining skills are highly sought after if one desires to purchase gifts at the most reasonable price. It is not uncommon for most shop keepers to sell at extravagant rate, but only to reduce it to more than 50%. Non-Chinese speaking visitors might be at a disadvantage as most sellers are Chinese and probably have little to no command of English language. My personal experience at a liuli shop where I bought two liuli glass mini Buddha (pink and blue) confirmed that without haggle, I would be literally “cheated”. They finally offered me discount of up to 80%, to my disbelief. I was clearly elated with both the deserved price and the desired possession. This probably revealed how desperate shop keepers are to quickly sell off their products when there is a customer who truly wants it. As a vegetarian, I was relief that Yuyuan has a mouth-watering and famous restaurant called Songyue Lou that dedicates to only Chinese vegetarian cuisine. This saves us from hunger in the midst of our shopping mission. All in all, it is highly recommended to visit Yuyuan old street even with a hectic travel schedule as it could prove a big miss if one skips it entirely. Half a day might be too rush to cover every corner of the street, and beware that it is easy to get lost in these intertwined walkways. The easiest way to travel here is to alight at Yuyuan Garden train station and to walk for around 10-15 minutes to reach the main street.

We visited here in August 2019 on a tour. Although we were only here for a couple of hours, it was no where near enough time to get through all the shops and food stalls and sights. August is a very busy time and there were many many people everywhere. The architecture was wonderful, and so much to see. Definitely worth the visit. Leave yourself enough time.

Good people watching in an old-style shopping area. The architecture is distinctly Chinese, but almost theme park-ish. I'm not sure about the quality of the goods, but there is a large variety. Plenty of people in the area to offer you replica items such as watches and handbags.

Unforgettable experience, the atmosphere is phenomenal, lots of shops and restaurants, the hard part is not stopping at all. Since the route is outside, it is advisable to go when it is not raining. But if it happens, there are plenty of places to take shelter, to taste unique delicacies for example.

If you don’t like crowds - DO NOT VISIT, but it is a wonderful mix of all types with a great vibe. Well worth visiting, but find a spot to sit amd watch the crowds hussle through. Many interesting little shops, but quite touristy. A stop at the famous Dumpling shop is a must.

Like other market areas a mix of fake and cheap stuff with some mainly inside more upmarket shopping e.g. shop No.19 is great for pearls and jewellery.
Take the Metro as the station is 100m from the area. 3 Yuan from Nanjing Road or anywhere really and much more expensive by taxi. Metro like the London Tube, English ticket machines that take coins in the most part.
We found the markets bustling places but a lot of similar items. There is a Starbuck and limited toilets.
The Markets on the railway at Science Museum Line 2 were better. The best are still in Shenzhen railway station a 45 min train trip from Hong Kong.

Good place to enjoy china old garden. The rock is kind of natural beauty. Some indoor pavilion seems not well maintained. Garden is surrounded by many koi pond. Good for kid or adult that love to feed fish. Entrance fee is 30 yuan for adult and 15 yuan for kid. Fish food sold in front of ticket booth (the toy booth) 5 yuan for 2 packets.

Tips:
Entrance and ticket booth is near the bridge.

To reach this location from yuyuan garden metro station exit 2, just turn right and walk all the way (follow signage). Location is in the middle yuyuan bazaar.
