Very interesting wander within the Old Town one side is very touristy and noisy and selling stuff but once you wander into the old streets and lanes, away from the tour groups and the bright lights, you feel immersed into the real Shanghai life, often poor conditions but with happy people. This part was not rebuilt to look old or... More

A must visit in Shanghai but very crowded. Don't expect to have the place to yourself or get pictures without others in them.

We visited looking to purchase a few gifts but found the stores to be very touristy and of lower quality. You would need to negotiate to get the right price and then have lower quality products . With that said it was nice to visit and see this area of Shanghai. Lots of people trying to sell knock off handbags... More

it's like you enter shanghai in the past. It's completely different buildings to other part of Modern Shanghai with the skyscraper. It's unique and old.And it's like that all through years.

quite good and relaxing atmosphere in the weekdays. Suggest people can go there to experience food and take some great pictures.

Very interesting wander in Old Town - and although the edge of it is touristy with groups of people, once we wandered into the old streets and lanes, well away from the tour groups, we were the only Occidentals around. This part was not rebuilt to look old or authentic but was the real deal. It is not China Disney,... More

We are experienced Asia travellers, we have seen many old places in Asia which we loved and so we wanted to see the old city of Shanghai when we visited this town. It appears to be old, but if you look closer it is not old, the buidlings look like the old ones, but basically they build new ones to... More

A great way to spend a few hours wandering around Old Town Shanghai. Splattered with loads of culture, fashions and food and plenty of souvenirs to take home. The Gardens are also a step back in time. Well worth the visit.

A nice place to spend a few hours. Lots of good photo ops but the crowds make it difficult at times. I was able to haggle and get some good deals here.

Do not miss this. Repeat: do not miss this. The place still retains its charm - ancient tea houses, temples, incense stick sellers, bioscope shows with live narrators, and live dumpling making are all on show. It's crowded on weekends but worth the effort of going there. You will not be disappointed.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Shanghai’s original walls live on in the curve of the streets that serve as the border to the old city. An aerial view shows a clear circular outline and parts of the original wall are preserved as monuments to the ancient past. The main tourist attraction of Yuyuan (which means Yu garden, though it is often redundantly referred to as Yuyuan Garden) draws hordes of tourists every day, but wandering the streets around the complex reveals more exciting attractions such as food and antique markets. There are also streets lined with shops peddling everyday wares such as Chinese dining ware and craft notions that can be even more enticing to visitors uninterested in the usual tourist fare.
