The area
Neighbourhood: Gubei / Hongqiao / Minhang
West of Shanghai’s better-known business, cultural and entertainment centers, lies an expansive area of residential neighborhoods peppered with lifestyle pockets that have their own unique attractions. The schools have formed pockets of international communities throughout Gubei, Hongqiao and Minhang. Quite a few entertainment and shopping centers have built up over the years to cater to these communities. While living here means you are relatively far away from Shanghai’s usual hot spots, the large parks, spacious homes and proximity to great Japanese and Korean food keep the neighborhoods popular.

Something for Everyone
Oct 2020
Wide variety of eateries. Numerous choices for cocktails & beer as well. The area was clean, well kept up. People were friendly. Menus in English as well as Chinese. One could "bar hop" or sample a large variety of tasty treats down the "street". Outdoor seating as well as indoor seating available at all the locations we saw. Our visit was late afternoon to early evening on a Saturday and pedestrian traffic was just picking up as we were leaving around 20:00. Not all locations have happy hour, which we were surprised by that fact. Casual and comfortable area. Recommendation for families go earlier in the evening rather than later. One could spend an hour or all night in this area, just depends on what you are looking for. Prices, typical for Shanghai. Worth a visit or two.

Good variety of restaurants!
Oct 2018 • Couples
Lao Wai Jie offers a good variety of different restaurants.
Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Spanish, American, German and loads of pubs! If you don’t know what you fancy, it’s a great place to visit.

We are staying at the Marriott Hongqiau Hotel in Shanghai and Laowai Street is only 15 minutes away by walking. It offers a wide selection of restaurants.

Best place to find food, drinks & friends
May 2018 • Solo
Always a place I visit during my stops in Shanghai... About 10-12 minutes walk from LONGXI LU metro station... Or see my attached photo for Chinese address for taxi driver.
Lots of bars showing live sport, pool tables, happy hours, food from around the world.
Beware, this is a "lady drink" area in some bars... Just saying...
It is a very safe place to relax and enjoy.
Recommendations are Big Bamboo bar for sports and pool, Pitstop bar for beers, Fat Cow for a decent burger and cocktails.
Have fun

Bit of a tourist trap.

Everything in one street and even a fake market at Pearly city. Western bars and food available. Makes for a pleasant evening out

Good Food and Drinks in a Nice Area
Mar 2018 • Friends
Foreigner Street is located in a nice area of Shanghai. It's clean and well situated near Longxi Metro Station. There is a variety of food choices, such as Thai, Mexican, American. The food is really good. This is an awesome place to hang out with friends, especially on a sunny day. After Laowai, I recommend you make your way over to Yili Park (Yili Metro Station).

Restaurant Row
Apr 2018 • Friends
In spite of rumours that Laowai Jie is going to be dismantled, it is very much alive and kicking. Laowai Jie is the restaurant row fairly close to Hongqiao Airport. It is stretching a good 480 meters. Good collection of different restaurants - brew pubs, Tapas, Indian, German, Pizza, Pasta, Thai, Indian etc. If you are in the area and want an escape from Chinese food this is a good place to visit. Unless you are passing by, wanting a change of scene or living close by there is really no reason to come out here. It is about a 30 minute trek from central Shanghai, the place is far from spectacular but is a good place for some fun and food.

Good place to find many pubs and western food
May 2017 • Business
Great bars & food with plenty of choice to choose from. Easy to reach near to Hongqiao airport and great old colonial building which are converted into restaurants and pubs. It is very popular with locals and expa. Especially great for Friday night and weekends.

Ironic there are few foreigners
Apr 2017 • Couples
1st time here and tickled they actually named this street as "foreigner street". There are a couple of western restaurants but many chinese/local restaurants too. It's ironic because 90% of the patrons seem to be local

Nothing special

An Escape
Mar 2017 • Couples
A nice escape in the west side of Shanghai featuring many English style pubs, East Indian and Mexican. Calm compared to most of Shanghai. Lowai refers to "foreigners" who are the main clientele here
