Started our hike at the Aernal observatory lodge, $10 - $15 fee to gain entrance to the trails. Nice easy start to the hike is rather deceiving. When you get to the actual trail head, it gets more challenging in a hurry. I was there on a beautiful, dry day and the trail was still very muddy and sliplery, often... More

The hike starts out easy enough but gets more challenging after you pass the gazebo. At that point it becomes more of a climb. Expect to get dirty as it can be very muddy esp. after a rain. We saw lizards, birds and a coati along the way and the lagoon at the top of the volcano is truly a... More

This was a challenging and beautiful hike! Be prepared to get dirty, especially if hike down to the lake at the end. Though it is not that long in distance, allow yourself 4 hrs (even if you are in good shape)- there is a lot of climbing and can be real hard on our knees. A great way to experience... More

Had probably the most difficult/rewarding hike I have ever taken. We had a guide which I cannot argue isn't necessary it was greatly appreciated. Jorge from The Back Packers tours taught us so much about the area and the terrain. We paid 55/person and got transportation, lunch and rum punch for the hot springs afterwards instead of 12 for just... More

This was a tough hike and I'd doubt anyone would argue. We started at the Green Lagoon Wellbeing resort which is 20 minutes outside La Fortuna. You do need a 4wheel drive to manage a drive from the waterfall parking lot. My wife argues you dont need 4wheel. She was not driving. The cost is $12 usd. It took us... More

Depending on the ages in your group this hike is fantastic, but once you reach the cloud forest the path is very worn, can be extremely slippery, and requires hikers to cling to the side of trees before reaching the top. Although we went on a sunny day, the trail was very muddy, so we took our time going back... More

My boyfriend and I (mid 20s) really enjoyed hiking Cerro Chato. We got a taxi from downtown La Fortuna to the Green Lagoon lodge. At the lodge, you pay $12 each to get access to the trails. The receptionist showed us a map with trails to follow. After the hike, you had take free showers at the lodge, which was... More

This Hike up the Cerro Chato is well worth the effort. The beautiful lake in the center of the volcano is a must see.

Amazing! Hands down one of the best things I have done in Costa Rica. You do not need a guide as the trail is easy to follow. However, you do need to be very fit. I run ultramarathons and rock climb and even I wondered if I should continue a couple of times due to steepness and need to climb... More

We all made it to the lake but I'd only recommend it for those with decent shoes (keens or boots) and willingness to get wet and dirty. I had rain gear which was nice because it rained hard most of our hike. It is much more than just hiking. Plan on scrambling over and around rock, tree roots, trees, etc... More
