About
Back in its original location in Coco center, across from the Panaderia Tutu, Rojas Bros. Boruca Indigenous Art & Gallery is the first ever art space and gallery in Coco Beach to exhibit the beautiful artisanry from our home village of Boruca, a small indigenous reserve in the southern part of Costa Rica. We are, Domingo Rojas, an artist from the Borucan reserve and a large family of artists, painters, sculptors, and weavers, and Graceann Barrett, from New York. We are now living in Coco and want to share the traditional arts of our indigenous culture with this beautiful beach community. We feature many other of the talented artists from Boruca who visit Coco Beach to exhibit their work and help to support the greater economy of our home town. We bring a wealth of information regarding the art, culture and environmental protection of the Borucan people. Our primary works of art are elaborated from balsa wood into the intricate Little Devil or environmental masks, always representing the flora and fauna native to Costa Rica, and always in recognition of the legacy left behind by the Borucan ancestors. Rojas Bros invites innovative art utilizing new techniques and styles. We also offer traditional weaving using natural cotton fibers and dyes made by the Borucan women, and various pieces of jewelry and other crafts that demonstrate the Borucan skills as artisans. Come visit the Rojas Bros. Boruca Indigenous Art & Gallery!

Please advise that this business is no longer located in Playas del Coco. Was informed by a taxi driver that they relocated out of town. We were unable to locate.

We traveled from Flamingo to Playas del Coco expressly to visit the gallery - on the trail of authentic indigenous art. When I could not locate, directly across from Pandaria Tutu, enquired at a rental car agency nearby. The agent was familiar with the gallery but advised they closed their doors 3 months ago!
Very disappointing!

Some nice stuff to see. Galery is in a open restaurant where the service was average. Same art style can be purchased elsewhere at better prices.

I'm sorry your experience in our gallery was not up to your standards, and it does not seem like you were there during our tour hours or didn't have a chance to talk with the attendant, which would have given you a better understanding of our gallery. We do not sell inexpensive Borucan masks, nor do we offer masks made by non-Borucans that are imitating the Borucan style, and so our prices reflect a fair payment made to an authentic Borucan indigenous artist. Borucan art is very popular, and our collection is constantly being replaced, with new and more elaborate pieces (paid for at higher prices, which again reflects in their costs) and very frequently visitors who hesitate to make their purchases miss the opportunity to buy their favorites because they sell instantly. Most customers agree that we have the highest quality and it's because the best artists choose to work with us for our fair pay scale. If you feel that a mask where they are not paying the artists as much nor making sure that the art is actually Borucan is just as good as our collection, you are more than welcome to purchase pieces from those places. If not, in our gallery your purchase comes a guarantee of ethical trade and authenticity.

While walking along the Avenida Central in el Coco, we discovered this wonderful art gallery within the Provecho Restaurant (which we also enjoyed). Thank you so much, Grace, for introducing me to Borucan Art! What you taught me has given my experiences in the Osa Peninsula more depth. The hummingbirds have good homes in Alaska. Many blessings to you!

I found this gallery of Art & Craft works of the indigenous Borucan people during my second (or third) trip to Playas del Coco, CR. It is always interesting as they continually replace/replenish the display as items are sold, which happens very frequently. The Hostess of the Gallery is very knowledgeable and gives interesting background into the creation of the pieces. Truly a find!! Authentic Art!!

I continue to visit and purchase each time I return as I now have a part-time residence in Coco. :)

This is a small sampling of local handicrafts but good quality items. They have various shows of artisans working their crafts too. This was probably one of the best selections of woven items from natural fabrics and dyes, all made here in Costa Rica, not China where a lot of the souvenirs are made.

Thank you for your review Cheryl! We are so happy that you enjoyed your experience at our gallery and our exhibitions, and that you recognize the high quality work we exhibit. It's true that many of the products in downtown souvenir shops generally come from other countries, mass produced by large factories, products which then hurt local artisans who cannot compete with the low prices. By supporting our gallery and leaving your comment, you have helped us in our mission of increasing recoginition and economic opportunity to the artisans of the indigenous Borucan village. Thank you so much for your support! - Grace

I was staying at Secrets resort and decided to go to Coco Beach to do some shopping one day with the wife. An employee at the resort told us to check out this Art Gallery in Coco beach and we were so impressed. The masks were so beautiful and the detail incredible. We bought a few different items and a large mask which is now hanging in our front hallway. Every time I pass by, I smile and think of Costa Rica. What a wonderful, unexpected surprise this little gallery was. Highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Gorgeous original art work! If you are looking for an original souvenir then head on over to this small yet personal art gallery. I loved hearing the background history to the creation of the masks. And I was so pleased that my purchase would help the Borucan community!

One of the best places to buy real, handmade Borucan masks and other artwork. Great people, great products. Pay careful attention to quality when purchasing Borucan art; Rojas Bros offers the best.
