From a distance the beach looks great but up close it appears to be dirt It is mainly volcanic sand. The water is pleasant.

Was a nice Beach, Clean, Great Views, Not crowded. Parking! Messages on the Beach, Bars and Restaurants right there. Waves!
Be careful, there are two Playa Hermosa beaches. This one is just up the coast from Playa Coco which is a happening little town with a Spring Break vibe. Playa Hermosa is the opposite. It was busy, but still quiet and peaceful, even during the...More

This is the American enclave of Costa Rica, touristy and with all the conveniences you get in areas with major resorts. Not recommended for a true Costa Rican experience, rather, visits places like Santa Teresa or Samara to experience what Costa Rica is really like.
We loved renting a house and staying in this area because it's "away" from the more commercialized popular areas. Very peaceful and relaxing, yet close and convenient enough to easily drive to the more commercialized areas when you want to go. Beach here is wonderful.
