Established in 1987 in an abandoned cacao farm the botanical garden is a permaculture farm with a mature collection of fruit and spice trees in production and lots of tropical flowers. Corridors of rainforest make it into a fascinating nature park. Visitors will be able to try a fresh fruit drink, taste fruits in season, sample homemade natural chocolate, and learn about medicinals and ethnobotanicals. Finca la Isla is a working farm producing black pepper, fruits, and ornamental plants in commercial quantities. Besides the opportunity to see very rare tropical plants visitors will learn about tropical crops like bananas, black pepper, and nutmeg. The botanical garden is one of the very best places in Costa Rica to see frogs in the wild. Our rainforest will provide the chance to see four different kinds of poison dart frogs, reptiles, toucans and many other birds, sloths, and the marvel of symbiosis and diversity that is the tropical rainforest. Visitors are guaranteed to see the red poison dart frog in the wild.

Great adventure at a very reasonable price! It's like a scavenger hunt/connect the dots to get around. Very welcoming! At the entrance they gave us samples of jack fruit, snake fruit and chocolate from their garden. Just be on the look out for signs on your way in, tricky to find!

While the signs may not be great/clear, on arrival we received a warm and friendly welcome. The self guide and map made it interesting to wander at our own leisure and see a range of plants and loads of red dart frogs and butterflies. I would take plenty of bug repellent, and when we went it was still quite rainy,... More

Lovely stroll around the property viewing lots of different fruit trees and plants. Saw lots of red poison dart frogs too! Got a nice fruit drink at the end and chatted to a lovely guy who is passionate about fruit and sustainability. Great value too, only $6!

The Botanical Garden is a respite from the beachlife in Puerto Viejo, it's a cool and fresh oasis filled with the sounds of birds, frogs and chirping insects. There are so many different fruit trees from all over the tropics gathered here, and all are living in a very natural environment. The plants look happy! The guides are friendly and... More

The Finca La Isla Botanic Garden is a beautiful place to wander around. There is a wide range of interesting tropical plants and trees and many red poison dart frogs if you look closely. The guide Allan was very friendly and helpful, and gave me some local fruits and an interesting beverage to sample. Some of the tags on the... More

We had nice time in Finca la isla, it's 15-20 minutes walking from Puerto Viejo, we just walked along the beach of Playa Negra until we got there. We received a map and an explanation about the place from a really nice man and went to see the garden. We didn't see any animals except for the red frog. Bring... More

After we paid our admission, a nice young man offered us fresh araçá juice and a sampling of other fruits in season from their garden: star fruit, durian (it tasted like onion and garlic in honey, not a flavor I need to experience again), kumquat, kapel and charichuelo, and also some artisan chocolate. Normally they offer the fruit at the... More

I walked here from the town center. The staff was super friendly and the park has no shortage of weird fruit trees and flowers, even saw 3 or 4 of the tiny red poison dart frogs. It was a great walk in the shade and the fruit and juice sampling alone at the end was worth the cost.
