Our San Jose Walking Tour is a must during your visit to the capital! For years both locals and foreigners have forgotten what the capital has to offer. San Jose is a city full of history, architectural beauty, colorful gardens and it's citizens are recognized as friendly and happy people. This tour was first started in 2010 and it consists of a historical journey through the capital and aims to show a new side of the city very few people have seen. A more authentic side full of small details that define the culture of Costa Rica.

Food and tourism go hand in hand. Costa Rica has thousands of flavors and ChepeCletas would like to invite you on a tour that can be seen, smelt and tasted. Join us to discover the Central Market, founded in 1880, it preserved the heart and essence of the Costa Rican popular culture. It is possible to find a great assortment of fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, spices, ornaments, animals and even religious figures. It is known for its sodas (small informal restaurants) which are the oldest and most famous of the country for their food, traditions and personalized service. Many businesses have remained in the same family for up to four generations. Their owners show great pride in this legacy and have found the market to be like a second family. The Central Market is alive and is used by everyone. Visits to this place go far beyond a simple shopping experience; it's a real social experience.

I booked a last minute trip to Costa Rica and wanted to find a city tour of San Jose to learn more about the culture. I found ChepeCletas through Lonely Planet, and contacted them after I arrived. They were quick to reply, and even though their public tour didn't work out with my schedule, they were able to offer me... More

The tour we went was fun, pleasant and very educational. Our guide was very knowledgeable and the staff was friendly and helpful. It is nice to be with a group of people who just want to enjoy the beauty of the season, learn and share a nice picnic at the end:) If you want to know a bit more this... More

We had an afternoon for a tour of San Jose prior to joining a group tour, so we hired ChepeCletas for a walking tour downtown (including a visit to the Central Market and food-tasting). Our guide, Carla, was a delightful young woman who shared many interesting tidbits about the history of San Jose, the architecture of the buildings, the workings... More

I was a little bummed that they canceled my bike tour the night before, but went ahead with a walking tour the next day. It was totally worth it. I paid $35 (ended up tipping a little too) and went with Andres in a tour of the city. Andres was very knowledgeable about the history & culture of Costa Rica... More

Thank you very much for your review Ray. We're so sorry you couldn't experience our public weekly night bike tour in San Jose. We just moved to a new building and last week the building was closing to early so we couldn't take our bikes for rent out at night. We're glad that you could take our walking tour and... More

We met Maria Jose in front of the Teatro Nacional at 9 am. She was right on time. She led us around central San Jose pointing out historical and interesting landmarks and points of interest. While she denied it, her English was better than some people I know in the States. The 2 hours flew by and I'll bet that... More

We arranged this at the last minute and were happy that we were given Carla an interesting, educated and informative young guide. We learnt about the history of Costa Rica and how it was reflected in the architecture. The tour culminated in a tasting session in Soda Tala in the central market which was delicious and filling so don't have... More

The tour is amazing. I am costarican and had never seen my city nor learned about it in such a way that I ended up admiring and loving it. The concept is simple, you walk around several important places, listening and learning. I fell in love with my city. I totally recommend it, if you are a national or a... More

After a delayed start due to an accident our bike tour turned into a walking tour which was amazing. We wandered through areas we would never have found, learning much of the early history of San Jose and visiting some of the more interesting galleries. Loved that our guide Jose realized our interests and took us to places off the... More
