The Jade Museum and of precolumbian culture is positioned as an innovative state-of-the-art cultural proposal in the protection and conservation of archaeological heritage in Central America. Located in the center of Costa Rics's capital, the building was especially constructed to house the museum's collection, its architecture evoking a cut jade block. This building in the centre of San Jose is a jewel in itself and probably the finest modern building in a city not high in my estimation for decent architecture. The museum contains many jade objects, funerary items and explains the history and culture of...More

I am kind of weird about things like this. If it's a jade museum, I expect to see JADE. Big pieces of jade, not just small chips and jewelry. The focus seemed to be on meso-american culture and how jade played into that. Definitely not...More

The pre-Columbian natives produced pieces of jade, used as decorative object. You will not find big objects in any museum in Costa Rica. The collection that is exhibited in this museum has more than 7000 objects in Jade, ceramics and stone

The museum was clean and well maintained. The exhibits were very well presented. We have been to museums all over the world and this was right up there with the best as far as presentation. We found ourselves spending about 2 hours wandering through and...More

I really enjoyed this museum and I am not a museum person. It tells a very harsh history in a real and compassionate and loving manner. It is small enough to view all in 1 to 2 hours. Air conditioning is nice! Displays are artful...More

Yes you may. They have a very small souvenir shop. I found the prices to be a bit high, but that seems to be standard at museums.
