This museum is definitely worth visiting. It provides a very good historical appreciation of Costa Rican history. What I missed was information about the Spanish period, however. The location inside the former Army barracks is impressive.

We went to the 'gold' museum first and than this. I found this more comprehensive and also as informative as the gold museum. It didn't have the wide variety of the topic at hand as the gold - e.g. musical instruments, the different gold artifacts,... But it gave the same level of information as the gold plus more since this... More

The National Museum of course has Costa Rican history. It also has a butterfly garden that gives you a taste of the rain forest. Note the stone spheres carved somehow by Precolumbian indigenous peoples.

A beautiful old building with lots of character now put to a much better use than its original purpose - a military fort!

Our third time visiting this museum and always enjoyable. Large exhibit halls around a central garden area. The entrance is a small butterfly enclosure with some interesting specimens flying around.

You start off walking through a butterfly sanctuary, which was very neat. Then you walk up top and see some of the different parts of the history of Costa Rica.

There is lots of interesting stuff there: an exhibit about the fauna of the country, rooms set up as they were in colonial mansions, and most interesting of all, several rooms of pre-Colombian, copper, gold and ceramics. Less interesting were three room of plaster reproductions of European Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman sculptures. There was a lot of walking,... More

A place certainly worth a visit while in San Jose. The only thing that bothers me is that all entrance fees in Costa Rica are based on US dollars and not on the countrys currency wich makes it, in many cases, quite expensive for non-US visitors in comparison with fees asked for many activities in most industrialized countries. There is... More
