Good overview of Costa Rica's history. Starts with a butterfly garden in the ruins of part of the demolished fortress. Nice contrast. Very, very nice garden leading into the museum. Good over look of the city. All around good spot!

The national museum does alright. Set in an old fortress with bullet holes in one parapet, the museum boasts an array of exhibitions as well as a butterfly garden. Also of interest are the dungeons which feature graffiti from the prisoners who inhabited them. Worth...More

The Museo Nacional offers a variety of rooms, each presenting a specific period of Costarican history, and a closed garden for exotic butterflies. The best room is for me the one about precolombian history, with a lot of explanations, objects and reconstitutions (including some of...More

This is a great place to get a glimpse into Costa Rica's history. Since they abolished their military in the 1940s, this is one of the last monuments to the civil wars that were fought leading up to the military's abolishment. Best time to go...More

The museum is big and hosts different collections, from pre-Columbian gold to temporary expositions like the Japanese dolls collection (in the past). This is also a historic place, since the building was the Cuartel Bellavista, in the old army times, and is a memory of...More

I was informed when I purchased my ticket that a few of the exhibits were temporarily closed. However, the open exhibits were very good. My favorite part in this museum was the butterfly enclosure and if you're lucky you will get to see one up...More

As others have said, many of the exhibits have English information as well as Spanish. I don't speak Spanish either but I enjoyed my visit.
