Incredible example of Costa Rican cemetary

We went here in 2015 and were fascinated by the tombs & mausoleums - some are 'over the top'. Huge peaceful area to enjoy on your walkabout town.

People are buried here since the late 18th century. Most are of Spanish origine, but you also see Italian family graves and tombs of many other ethnicities. No native Costa Ricans, at least I did not find any. Remarkable are the great number of guardian angels. They look like happy humans, but have wings. Catholics believe these angels accompany you... Many impressive statuettes are to find at this cemetery - it's huge and very white and good for a quiet walk.

I like to visit old cemeteries to learn more about local history and culture along with the changes in architectural expressions in the monuments, statuary and headstones. I spent hours here meandering and learning. Admittedly the place is not an attraction for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Is a fantastic place to see a lot of nice arhitecture, because in Costa Rica are a lot of foreign people and they are like colony: italien, spanish, german. They come with their own culture and arhitecture and you will see alot of very beautiful monument in diferite style of construction, from a lot of material. Some are abstract, some... More

The cemetery is a quiet place with different headstones. You will be free to walk around and there are signs showing the most interesting path you can take, as well as historical figures buried there. If you like these places, it could be worth the visit if you are in the neighborhood, otherwise skip it.

It is a typical, big cemetary similar to many others in South America. The stone work and statues are impressive. But, unless you are into it and interested in who is buried where, just drive by and have a look at the massive graves and the size of the statues.

There are some large masoleums and interesting headstones but nothing to merit a special trip or to take time out of a busy trip schedule. Do be careful about walking around here as it is not in the best area of town. If you drive there, there is really no good place to park a car. On Saturdays there is... More

this is a traditional latin cementery. Nothing else to say, but it has nice sculpture and mausoleos though.

I've passed by this historic cemetery many times, always intrigued by the grand structures and sculpture within. Finally made the effort to visit. OH MY!!!!! This beautiful sacred place is full of awe inspiring graves and tombs. From Presidents to the wealthy and influential, many famous historical figures rest in this place. It is a MUST SEE !!
