We arrived in the middle of February when things are pretty slow in Haines but as soon as we walked in we were greeted warmly and given a brief tour. They have great displays if all of the animals native to alaska from bears and moose to salmon sharks and wolves. It has a nice history of the area and... More

My wife and I came to photograph this year's (2016) gathering of bald eagles over Thanksgiving. We were a little spoiled by previous experience photographing eagles in Homer (where they were being fed a few feet away), so had to adjust our expectations a bit. Lots of eagles, but they were typically 100 feet or more away. Not a problem... More

Eagle festival has lectures, trips to viewing area, dinner, auction, and special events. Definitely worth the trip.

We came to see the eagles and to see the rehabbed eagles released. There were lots of eagles this year and we really enjoyed seeing them.

The preserve is basically a large conservation area along the river by the Haines Highway. The eagles congregate here by the thousands in fall an early winter (perhaps longer). We had poor weather throughout our visit but still got to see 100s of eagles. Photos were somewhat limited by the poor lighting and rain and the distance to the eagles,... More

This was a great raft ride. I mistakenly believed that we would have seats in the raft but there is a rope which goes around the raft that you can hold onto as you sit on the outer edge of the raft. We saw 103 bald eagles on this ride and one eagle nest. The meal afterwards was just a... More

We love to see eagles and were delighted to see several. Our favorite was the eagle that was doing some fishing and caught a salmon. We also saw some nests. The visit to Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was very nice.

Although we were there during the time bald eagles are usually there, we didn't see them at the preserve. We saw them around Haines in other locations, though. This was still a beautiful drive, with many places to pull out and take short interpretive walks, picnic, etc. The river is beautiful as it braids its way down the valley, and... More

There are many stops and pull overs to view the river, mountains and surroundings. we saw bald eagles, beautiful scenery and even mountain goats on the surrounding mountains. Everything is free, no permits or parking fees. Great for the liesurly drive.

We missed the ferry to Skagway during our cruise and I was gutted. The way things worked out however it really was the best thing that could have happened. We decided to join the excursion that called in at the Klukwan preserve and then rafter through the bald eagle reserve. The Klukwan preserve was great and we caught up on... More
