Had some time to kill before our flight left later on in the afternoon so decided this was the way to go. Hiked a little way up to the museum only to find it closed so there went that. Sat on the swing for a few minutes while contemplating our next move. Wasn't much else to see so we went... More

The old processing building still has equipment used in the mine. A volunteer told us about the mine's history and how the ore was processed. Getting to the museum may be a problem for those with impaired mobility. You either walk or bike from downtown Juneau (allow at least an hour if walking), or drive in the smallest car you... More

Fascinating display of mining equipment, but the drive out to the mine is a gold-mine in itself. You pass mountains with waterfalls and drive on a narrow road - it is not far from town, but it seems like you are worlds away. Definitely a 5-star experience!

Tried twice to see it. Really wanted to. Apparently they open when they want, only. Seems like someone else could run it better. Renee was snooty on phone.

The whole trip was fun. The winding ride to the mine, the old miner taking us through the mine and explaining the different methods of mining, the short explanation of what the mine was like before it closed during the second world was. Well worth the trip.

We arrived in Juneau by cruise ship and booked an excursion that left in the afternoon. We had time to kill so we went to the visitor center to inquire about things to see. We were told the Last Chance Mining Museum was good, but we would have to find a tour bus that would graciously allow us to ride... More

This museum is in the compressor room of the last chance mine. There are old photo's and tools from the mine as well as some of the surrounding mines. Nice but small, out of the way and you can pan for gold yourself in Gold Creek. I enjoyed it.

The proprietor here is extraordinary and opened up for us during their off hours. We were fortunate enough to arrive when a local was bringing visitors so she gave her a call and Voila! We were in. Everything was interesting and many things we learned here were explanatory for things we saw as our Alaska trip continued.

We visited the Last Chance Mining Museum on our last two visits to Juneau because of the beautiful setting and the extensive amount of artifacts. The caretaker was a wonderful source of information, as was the volunteer. Being greeted by Galena was an extra special treat! Be prepared to walk along a very steep incline to see the rail cars... Not much history to see in my opinion. It is very steep for seniors to get to museum and pricey for what they offer to see.
