My husband and I flew to Alaska from San Diego and had a fishing trip planned with our guide Bill to go silver salmon fishing. We started our day at 5:30 am because Bill wanted to ensure we had the best spot on the river. The last couple weeks were slow for salmon fishing and Bill wanted to give us the best possible chance to catch something. It was extremely cold, 30 degrees but Bill packed two portable heaters. I was extremely grateful because I am not used to that kind of cold! I caught 2 giant salmon and the other couple caught 3. We were really because the other boats only caught 1 or nothing at all. Bill is a really genuinely good guy. We chatted for hours and I can just tell he is a hard working genuinely nice person. It is hard to come by people like him him. My husband and i wished we had another day planned with Bill because we had such a good experience. We plan to come back next summer. I highly suggest booking this charter. You won’t be disappointed.

We had visited Alaska on a cruise and knew that we wanted to see more. We booked a three-day, four-night trip from our home in California. PROS: —Gary and Darlene and the staff (we worked mostly with Misty) were wonderful to deal with. They were always quick to respond to questions and always pleasant. —The lodging is perfect. We stayed in a cabin by the main lodge. Well appointed and comfortable. Everything you could need is already there—coffee, dishes, fridge/freezer, nice towels (not the sandpaper towels that you find in motels), plenty of room to eat comfortably. Small deck and patio with bbq and picnic table. Just perfect! —Location is close enough to “town” but far enough so you don’t hear or see traffic. Easy to get to grocery store, coffee kiosk, etc. —Halibut fishing was spectacular. Captain Jesse and Alexis were awesome! Knowledgeable, helpful, just incredible. Everyone limited and had a terrific time! CONS: —We originally booked the trip for May 2020. We paid extra to have a cabin on the river. When coronavirus hit, Gary offered to reschedule with full credit, so we rescheduled for September. When we were a couple months away from the trip we were told that there were no cabins by the river available during our trip. We asked for a refund of the money that we paid for the u upgrade but were told that WE WOULD NOT GET OUR MONEY BACK FOR THE UPGRADE because they had already “accrued some expenses.” (No one was able to tell us what the expenses were.) As it turned out, one of the guys in one of our trips was staying in a cabin on the river and had booked his trip just two weeks prior. BOTTOM LINE: THEY CHARGED US FOR THE UPGRADE, PUT US IN REGULAR PRICED LODGING AND KEPT THE UPGRADE MONEY, THEN RENTED OUT THE RIVER CABIN AGAIN FOR THE HIGHER CHARGE. —Fishing on the Kenai River was a good time. Captain was friendly and knowledgeable. It was the Captain plus three fishermen; only two fish were caught, but that’s no one’s fault. The Captain tried lots of different things to try to catch fish; they just weren’t hungry! The views of the early morning sky were spectacular. What makes this trip a “con” is that the fish we caught was a pregnant female; we talked with the Captain about how we would use the roe. When we were done and getting ready to disembark and were getting our fish, the Captain handed us our bag of fish but not a bag with our roe. We asked him where it was and he had tucked it away and got it out for us with kind of a “oops, busted” look on his face. CLEARLY HE INTENDED TO KEEP IT FOR HIMSELF AND WAS HOPING THAT WE WOULDN'T ASK FOR WHAT WAS OURS. That left us with a bad feeling. —After the unfortunate Kenai River trip, we were really looking forward to another day of Halibut fishing. When we returned to the lodge, we were told that our third day of fishing was CANCELLED due to the boat breaking down. The backup plan presented to us required us to spend an additional $500, and the trip was not something that we would ever have chosen to do. Seriously—that was their only backup plan. Since we couldn’t fish anymore, we decided to end the trip, leave town, and make our own plans for the time left. Darlene offered us a full refund for the cancelled trip BUT ONLY A PARTIAL REFUND FOR THE REMAINING NIGHT! Only after we pushed back was she willing to give us the full credit for the cancelled night. I didn’t like that her first offer was a partial credit, SINCE THEY WERE THE ONES WHO DIDN’T DELIVER WHAT WAS PROMISED. BASICALLY, WE FLEW 2000 MILES FOR TWO DAYS OF FISHING. We will definitely be back to Alaska for fishing, but we will make our own lodging arrangements and book our fishing trips on our own. We DO NOT recommend Alaska Fish On.

Hey Bud, I read your review and I appreciate you writing one but I see some inconsistent with it. I see that one minute you were talking great things about our cabin and how we treat people with putting clean linen coffee and everything a person would need while staying in Alaska. I don’t see how you could get upset about not being on the river which being on the river in September makes zero sense as you cannot fish from the shore and catch fish in September. The cabin you stayed in has great views of the inlet and the mountains when you change the dates to September those cabins got booked up immediately not ten days before your trip. I just want to say that you have no idea how many expenses occur when somebody cancels as we pay our other outfitters and lodging ahead of time and if we cancel they do not refund the money so you were complaining about losing a little bit of money when we lost your deposit earlier in the year not quite sure where you came from on that one. I can guarantee you that our captains try their hardest to catch fish and If he forgot to give you the eggs that is not uncommon because we use those for bait so maybe he never heard you in the first place so I apologize for that but that is where we get bait to be able to catch the fish once again I can guarantee you we have some of the best guides money can buy. My wife remembers the trip very well and she even offered to give you Guys a fly out fishing trip which a lot of our clients love it that was what the extra 500 would be for because you fly out and see bears while fishing we make very little money off of that so not quite sure why you would complain about that as you were saying you wanted more fish and most people limit out over there. I’m not quite sure why you’re coming off with telling me how you flew thousands of miles to fish 2 days when you actually payed to go on a cruise and the fishing was something extra that you were doing. Fishing is fishing sometimes it can be great and sometimes it can be tough but to degrade a business because of one bad day of fishing is crazy. I hope you reconsider and be fair with your review. I know that we treat our clients very good and our reviews show it some people have a hard time when they don’t catch their full limits of fish but Guarantees are something that we just can’t offer but I can guarantee you that we have some of the best guides working for us. Once again thank you for the review and we hope you enjoy your fish. Thanks, Gary & Darlene @ Alaska fish on charters!

Let’s start with we were a group of 6 traveling from Buffalo for our first Alaska fishing experience. After reviewing every possible place to stay and Charter we decided that Fish -On charters was the way to go. Gary and Darlene kept us updated on Alaskan traveling requirements and issues dealing with COVID in Alaska. When we pulled in the driveway and parked we were met by Gary like we were friends who hadn’t seen each other in awhile. The lodging whether you are in the Cabins or rooms in the lodge are excellent. They come with full kitchens and comfortable beds. The view overlooking the inlet is amazing, close to many local restaurants, stores to take care of all your needs. We did the captains special package which was 2 half days of salmon, and one full day of Halibut. The first trip was a Halibut out of Homer. A two hour drive from the lodge early in the morning, so be prepared to get up early. We launched at 645 am, with Captain Jesse and his daughter Alexis. What a crew they are, funny and informative, we boated out 30 miles to fish were no one else was. And it paid off.... We limited out on the Halibut, caught a skate, about 20 Spiny dog sharks, and just had a blast. We caught some good size Halibut over 40 inches. Alexis, this girl works her butt off the whole time, baiting, getting things set up, and most impressively filleting your fish as we headed back to the harbor, this was not an easy task as we motored back in. If you can get this crew, lucky you. The next day was Silver salmon fishing, we had heard that they had about a weeks worth of great fishing, then the high tides were making fishing a little tougher. The first day we went out and caught half of our limits, nice fish, and also caught several pinks which we did not keep. Please note we caught fish, while other boats did not, these guides knew where to go. The second day of salmon, we had Bill and Gary as our captains. Gary (the owner) cancelled his moose hunt to captain one of our boats, as he was not happy we did not catch our limits the day before. So at 430am he and Bill had us on the water....Let the fishing begin, because with these two, the game was on. They got us on there favorite spots, told us why they were there favorite spots, explained how the salmon ran and boy did they deliver. On a day where very few boats caught near there limits we were pulling in silvers all day and almost everyone limited. They even stayed on the water a little extra to see if they could get the limits for the two who did not. We even caught a bonus Sockeye. These two are competitive and want to catch more, and faster than the other. At one point Bill was ahead by five, and Gary promised his guys he would catch em, and he delivered. Great fun, .great times had by all. This is the one, you feel like family, they want you to catch fish, and lots of them. They have several packages to meet your need. We will be back, my sons and I have promised an every two year trip to see our new friends in Kenai.

Just finished my 6th trip with Alaska Fishon charters and we got our limit of reds on the 4 days we fished them. Gary and Darlene are excellent hosts and have kept us happy every time we have gone with them. Cabins are comfortable and the boats on the Kenai are top notch. The views and the wildlife will keep you entertained when your not on the water. When you use the same outfitter 6 times they must be doing something right
