Nice totum poles and carving shop

We enjoyed our stop in the village. The tour guides from the village were very friendly and approachable. The carving shop was very cool to see.

The village is very much for tourists. The singers have good strong voices, but some of them do not actually speak the language so could not tell me what the chants mean. The dancing is quite sedentary, more swaying about. The woodcarver's assistant told us plenty, the wood carver was whittling, no carving was taking place although there was a... More

We booked this through the Holland America Line, and it was an excellent choice. All of the presenters were "real people" not polished tour guides, and were happy to answer any questions about their village, culture, and history. The native dances that included members of the audience were especially enjoyable for my family. The carving shop was very interesting, where... More

The village is on backside of Ketchikan Island and many of the 120 year old Totem Poles have been restored and exhibited. Native Saxman Alaskan house and native dances are interesting. Dances are very similar to many Oklahoma tribes.

We had actually been here on our last visit to Alaska but were happy to visit again. It's an amazing array of totem poles and each one has it's own story. Our guide told us several of the stories and then we had time to roam around and examine the poles up close. There was even a viewing area where... More

We visited the Saxman Native Village after it was recommended by several locals as they have "authentic" native totems. We were excited to go but once we rode the city bus out there, nothing was open. It was a Saturday in early Sept. so couldn't figure out why they weren't open as we weren't the only ones there to see... More

If you are into totem poles, then I guess you might get more out of this than we did. Our guide was very informative telling us about them and the area. There are restrooms near the totem pole park and also a store to purchase souvenirs.

We were disappointed with this as we expected more of a demonstration. The information session was good but the show itself was very light on.

Don't waste your time with the guided tour - in fact don't waste your time here - go to the other totem park about 1o miles north of town and wander and enjoy the non-commercial totems there

Great experience, learned a lot about totem poles and the local native tribes. Got to see a Tslingit dancers including some really adorable children. Get up and dance with them when they offer, it is truly fun. Be sure to pay attention to the delightful smell when you enter the long house, it will warm your soul
