This homestead museum was very interesting. The volunteers are so informative and helpful. We listen and asked questions, they were able to tell stories that were delightful. I was very appreciative of the time they spent with us. We were able to go on our own to visit the different buildings. Everything was located in the same area so walking... More

We stopped in at 3:45 not knowing they closed at 4. The volunteer, Carol, was very nice and took the time to show us around. We tried to make it quick so as not too keep her too long - wish we would have had an hour to an hour and a half, there is a lot to see. Free... More

My husband and I stopped by here on a Saturday morning because our fly-out fishing trip was cancelled. It is a small area with 3 of the original homesteads on it that you can see. It also has two small museum buildings. The volunteers/employees were very knowledgeable about the beginning of Alaska. We really enjoyed our visit here and would... More

We toured this amazing piece of history. The gal narrating was a joy to listen to. The buildings were close enough together that was still a nice walk even in the drizzly weather.

We stopped here more than once. The steps that go behind the visitor center leads down to a metal walk way along the Kenai river with a few picnic table, fish cleaning station and ability to enter the river to fish. The parking lot here is big enough for a few RV's and a few cars. The location is off the... More

Visited the museum while in town. It is staffed by friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. They can tell you all about the history of homesteading in Alaska. You can view artifacts and tour actual homesteading cabins - all donated to the museum by local residents. It was a great way to spend a few hours while our husbands fished. Stop... More

Go into the main building first. The docents have a wealth of knowledge and can tell you about the other buildings. In addition to some very nice displays of artifacts and displays the docents are locals who add a personal touch to the history. . .they helped make the history. A true gem and there is no fee. Yes, there... More

On our way from Homer to Kenai, we decided to stop at the homestead museum. There was no charge, but donations welcomed. The curators were very friendly, passionate, and knowledgeable. There was a lot of ak history shared, nice exhibits, and historic buildings to see. It was very interesting and a great museum...a definite gem!

We were really impressed with this stop. Besides a variety of older tools and history of the '64 quake, there were a variety of buildings outside. They showed about six ways that pioneers put corners on their cabins and boats with special ribs. There was also a building with many types of preserved Alaskan animals to view. The volunteers were... More

I stopped at the museum this past Thursday while on a visit to Alaska. Because it was the off-season, I think I may have been the only visitor that afternoon. The docent Carrollyn was amazing. She spent two hours explaining how Soldotna/Sterling was settled, drawing on first hand knowledge of many of the veteran settlers. Carrollyn explained details about the... More
