Independence Mine is above timberline surrounded by beautiful peaks and tundra. The mine is somewhat interesting for a historical perspective. During summer you can walk and hike just about everywhere as the ecosystem is tundra. There are also trails that go up from the different...More

I love going up to Hatchers; practically in my back yard. Always a nice mini-road trip to the top. Excellent paths for all ability levels. Lots on history to take in.

Fall color at mine was beautiful. Park was closed for winter, so we hiked into the mine. Very interesting buildings at the mine, with good info. Discovered all the blueberries on the way down!! Yummy!

Although the mine could provide more tours and movies to explain the history of the site, it was well worth the trip just to see the beauty of Hatcher Pass. Great place to hike around a bit with young family.

Roughly 25-30 miles. Good paved roads all the way. Beautiful views along the way. If needed, when you get to parking area, follow signs to handicapped unloading area. Eliminates a little uphill walking.
