This is South Africa's newest large museum, in a special-purpose building which has been specially designed and fit for purpose. This is so new that the exhibition area is not yet open, but just a walk around the area is worthwhile exploring the various design features. Would be nice to have a "behind the scenes" tour....

Brand new and although not fully operational still worth a visit. It has state of the art technology preserving all the old books and relics. The building is as green as one can get.

I was really looking forward to visiting this museum of English language, but great was my disappointment when I discovered that the displays are being packed away and crated to the new venue, at 25 Worcester St, described by the previous reviewer. A telephone call to NELM confirmed the pending move, but they were unable to say when the museum... More

The new National English Literacy Museum is built in Worcester Street in Grahamstown and has been certified by the Green Building Council of South Africa as the first (5 Star) Green Star certified project in the category Public & Education Buildings in South Africa. When visiting we rang the bell and the door was opened but nobody talked to us. We did not really know where to go and walked into a few rooms. The rooms had posters with some poems printed on them. After about 2 minutes we left the museum. We were very disappointed. This museum was a real waste of time.... More
