This monument commemorates the life and journey of a group of colonialists led by boer "great trek" leader Piet Retief. At some stage Retief had a farm on the site.

Its a pity that the city of port elizabeth does not have a budget to maintain its historic sights. Its one of the oldest cities in South Africa and has a number of monuments to visit

Only saw it when passing on Marine Drive. Found in interesting to read, never noticed it the other times we have been to the shopping centre.

We stopped by to learn something but there were hobos sleeping around it. Some of the engravings were worn I think due to cleaning, not sure. A pity that it is not looked after properly

Easy access to the monument. The writing is clear and easy to read. A very interesting monument to stop at if you're passing by.

Austere but clean and tidy. Quite Interesting! Worth a visit. Have a quick meal and a cold beer at Something Good over the road.

Even though the monument is visible form Marine Drive, it is often overlooked by passersby. The area can sometimes be a bit dirty, but it is still a good place to visit and has lots of potential to be made the centre of attention. One...More
