This morning I went for a run from my hotel (Bon Hotel) in Bloemfontein and ran right to the Observatory on top of Naval Hill and also detoured to see Nelson Mandela's huge bronze statue. It was much easier going down. My legs had recovered from the Two Oceans Half marathon race. I saw ostriches and a lovely large giraffe... More

Not sure why it is Naval as nowhere near the sea. Pleasant drive round the hill via a private game reserve. Saw wildebeest and giraffe. Facilities at top seemed relatively new with monument to Nelson Mandela but very limited facilities other than basic toilets. Did not visit the planetarium as of little interest

The star gazing auditorium needs more comfortable chairs as the show is abit longer and after 10 minutes the neck muscles get strained.

This is a nature reserve smack in the middle of the city with gorgeous views far and wide. Good the walks and cycling.

The highspot (probably literally) if the city of flowers. Looming over the monstrous melange of concrete and palling, Naval Hill is festooned with radio masts and is about as far from the sea as Oklahoma. Only for the travel writer or truly bored.

We got close up to 3 giraffe grazing on the road, stopped for a Zebra crossing - well, 3 actually joining another 4, saw a herd of Wildebeest and Springbok. Drove up to the viewpoint, had our picture taken with the giant Nelson Mandela statue (20 ZAR per picture, £1.30) and gazed across the panorama of Bloemfontein (and the approaching... More

Good views from the top of the drive but not much else to draw you up here. Bit tatty in places. Big statue of Nelson Mandela at the top

A great place to look out over the city in the center of South Africa! The only wildlife resort in the middle of a city in the world I believe. It is quite an experience having a giraffe cross the road in front of you!

Naval Hill is a unique gem in the heart of Bloemfontein. If you walk from the gate, around the brim of the hill and back, the distance is approximately 8 kilometers. There are also great views of the city. A statue of Nelson Mandela is a beautiful attraction. Toilets are available, but no shops or restaurants exist. This is an... More
