Local residents, we took the tour a few months back. Wendy and other friends of the koppies lead us through all the way up to the top, telling us about the history of the reserve and area and city in general, touching on botanics, geology, preservation, water... A very complete visit, definitely worth attending. The sceneries are beautiful all along... More

My first trip to Melville Koppies was 47 years ago and I remember seeing the iron age smelting site and on going on a guided search for scorpions. Subsequent visits have always been informative, and the guides and managers who are all passionate volunteers, are very knowledgeable. It's a lovely place to take a Sunday morning walk and enjoy the... More

Although the Melville Koppies Reserve is greet, and years ago I walked my dogs there every weekend, in recent years vagrants have started living there and there have been several muggings. I would not suggest that a visitor to Johannesburg venture there unless accompanied by at least three other persons. Great walks, and from the top of the ridge one... More

An organised Sunday hike of the central koppies (unlike the open-access West and East sides, central is restricted; you go in with a guided group or not at all) is wonderfully strange. Your entire idea of the city is liable to change, and your understanding of its history, right back to the iron age, certainly will. The scenery is dependent... More

This gem in the heart of Johannesburg's Melville suburb is a great place to get away from the City rush and madness. A nice walk will clear the mind !

Such a beautiful place for walking and mountain biking but be careful it is notorious for hi jackings. Only use this facility in large groups. Pity its not as safe as it needs to be because it offers spectacular views of Johannesburg.

We attended one of their early Sunday morning walks. The pace was brisk but manageable and the views were worth it.
