We completed the guided tour of the central Koppies, it is a wonderful walk with amazing views of johannesburg. The guides have a detailed knowledge of the area and it is wonderful to see the indigenous flowers of the area. The walk was extremely enjoyable and highly recommend as an outing for children as the walk to not strenuous and... More

I walked to East Koppies from 1st Avenue turning left into 9th Street then left again into Rustenberg Road. 50m on the left at the start of the railings is the entrance. Follow the path to the top where there are good views of central Johannesburg. The actual area is grassy and also rocky and there was hardly any litter.... More

There are three parts to the Koppies. The safest and most informative way to visit is to join a Sunday morning tour of the secure natural preserve area, led by local naturalists. The fee is inexpensive and the guides know the koppies ecosystems very well. Our guides provided a lot of information about birds and local plants, including some traditional... More

This urban nature reserve is on my doorstep. One can only gain access with the volunteers who able run the place with no funding from the city. The Carstens who are the main guides and coordinate all the activities there, are very well informed and I learnt about flowers, trees, birds; geology and the archaeological findings there. It is well worth... More

Area has the potential to be a small attraction but at the moment security is absent, vagrants live there and there are faeces everywhere. Anyone who visits this place just to see the ancient pottery furnace will be sorely disappointed. I'd say its also incredibly dangerous to be there if not in a group of at least 10 people.

Taking a guide will definitely prove advantageous because there are wonderful stories to be told around the koppie.

Strange to have this in the middle of an urban area, but there are nesting eagles and other wonderful birds to see as well as great views.

It was beautiful and very nice to see fauna and flora indigenous to us. Loved the trail and gently slopes as well as the peace and quiet

Its very rewarding to walk up the Melville Koppies. Apart from the fresh crisp air you get stunning views of Jozi.
