This museum is housed in what was formerly the old fruit and vegetable market. The building alone is worth a visit, not to mention the interesting contents it has. View my photos as an enticement to visit. The little shop on the premises sells some beautiful pottery as well as traditional clothing. I would suggest you take along your own... More

Excellent items on display reflecting the uniqueness of South Africa's past. This museum is easily located with ample spare parking with "car guards".

Not worth the effort, even for free. As we were in the area , I wanted to show a visitor from London what a ''shebeen'' as per their website looked like. Not there anymore and a staff member, when asked, looked perplexed. Static displays and pictures of old Joburg may interest some. A day visit to the area would be... More

Another neglected space where living history/our stories have been buried and lost. This museum could and should have been on par with the British museum in London or MOMI in San FRansisco. It boasted some truly moving installations at some point and was used for book festivals ,book launches and other contributions to the conservation and memory landscape. My last visit a... More

This museum has so much potential however it is all unfulfilled. The museum is a bit if a mess and is definitely in need of a makeover. It's free and the security guard I spoke to at the entrance was pleasant. The shop I wanted to have a look in shad a notice that it was closed until 11 January... More

When greeted by your chaperone at bus stop ask to go to this museum behind the market theatre. Nice building some interesting history stuff plus temporary exhibitions.

I came in with alot more expectations and left unsatisfied. The museum is located on an old train station which makes for a beautiful setting. However, the collections were not complete and it felt rushed. What i liked best was the quality of photographs and artifacts. What i liked least was there was too many things going on, lots of... A sad experience in every sense of the word. The location is not someplace you'd want to spend any time in, the building seems to be in general disrepair, and many of the "exhibits" are closed or just in the dark. A few things left over from the Fall of Apartheid exhibition worth seeing, but don't expect much in the... More
