About
Footsteps to Freedom specialises in private touring in and around Cape Town. Curious travellers sometimes want a little more than simply scenic drives, selfies and shopping. Our Footsteps Guides have all had other professional careers before training as tourist guides. We'll reward your curiosity with specifically crafted experiences in Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and the Cape of Good Hope. Our private signature walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town, "Footsteps to Freedom", tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. The "Mandela in Cape Town: from prisoner to president" walking tour of Cape Town focusses on the story of apartheid and Nelson Mandela's role in its defeat and demise.

We booked our tour at very short notice but that wasn't a problem for our lovely guide Zuzeka who gave us an informative, authentic insight into the history of Langa where she lives with her family. She answered all our questions honestly, showed us around and talked about life in the township. We also saw some amazing arts and crafts created from recycled matetials by some of the township residents. It was a great tour - highly recommended.

We spent a morning tour in Cape Town with Garth Angus of Footsteps to freedom. He provided a clear, interesting and informative picture in a listener friendly manner. In a short morning, Garth was able to take us through historical and current social dynamics, challenges and issues in the most vivid, cordial and interesting way. We learned so much in just a few hours. Garth’s presentation offered a helpful framework for our understanding of all we experienced during our South Africa trip. Highly recommended.

What can I say, really. I spend four fantastic days touring with Garth. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable about the area, he was also very open to sharing South Africa's history, from the earliest people's to present day and everything in between. He was flexible, open and creative and was very gracious when answering my sometimes silly questions.
We went to Hermanus and saw plenty of whales, Arniston- a great quiet little sleepy fishing village, Franschoek, Stellenbosch, Lunga (the townships-a must for any traveler to Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, and many other sights and the stories about the colorful history of South Africa, travelled with us.
For anyone who really wants to learn about South Africa and see all that the Cape has to offer-use Garth, you will be delighted that you did.

A month ago, when I received the invite from Footsteps to Freedom, a walking tour company based at the Taj Hotel in the heart of the Mother City, to join them for a walk through Cape Town to learn about the life and times of Nelson Mandela, my interest was piqued as I felt that I wanted to know more about this incredible man and his struggle for freedom.
Two days before the walk was due to take place, Madiba left this world and his legacy was being celebrated throughout the city. The result was an incredibly emotional morning spent visiting the historical places that shaped South Africa’s future while listening to Garth Angus bring to life the human dramas that unfolded on Mandela’s epic journey.
The stories Garth told included tales of secrecy, bravery, intrigue, love, persistence and resilience like none I have ever heard. From a young age, Mandela was a well educated and athletic man and he would not sit aside and witness the injustices of the apartheid regime. He led a nation to a peaceful resolution and a democratic society through his love, forgiveness and a deep understanding and knowledge of all races history and reasoning. Imagine a prisoner being invited to a president’s house, only later to become president himself.
Do yourself a favour, whether you live in Cape Town or are visiting us from afar, set a day aside to go and listen to the stories of Madiba and stand in the places he stood in on his long walk to freedom.
I work for Nomad Adventure Tours and was offered a complimentary walk. Nomad however has no business affiliation with Freedom Tours and I would pay full price for this tour and I will be taking my friends on this tour too.

This was a great guided tour of the city center/downtown of Cape Town, and at the same time our guide gave us an overview of the history of Cape Town and South Africa, touching on everything from the geology of the region to the triumph of Nelson Mandela and everything in between. This was a great overview for our time in teh Cape Town area.

I would definitely recommend this walking tour for anyone who is spending at least a day in Cape Town. It was an excellent overview of Cape Town's incredible history - and the perfect way to start off your visit. The tour guide was very informative and engaging, and had a lot of personal stories to add of his own experiences during apartheid. Don't just spend all your time on the beach and out at restaurants when you're in Cape Town. Make sure you take this tour!

Garth picked us up at our hotel in the morning and we immediately felt connected. This was the beginning of a very interesting, educational and emotional tour of Cape Town and the Township of Langa. Garth was a very knowledgeable and interesting guide with a genuine love for people and Cape Town. The hours flew by and the day came to a sudden end, our feeling was that we wanted more!! We would like to thank Garth for his caring and genuine interest in his guests as well as his passion for Cape Town and the people of South Africa! We would like to take this opportunity also to thank Abongile (Vamos Township Tours, http://www.vamos.co.za/), who was our guide in Langa and who gave us a unique insight to the every day life of the township with all its burdens, but also the joy and laughter and compassion that lives in the community, for example the Happy Feet Youth Project (http://happyfeetyouthproject.org/)! It is a precious memory that we will cherish for the rest of our lives...! With very best regards from the Szomor family

We were jet lagged, but arrived too early to fall instantly asleep. A walking tour of Cape Town, downtown, was a perfect introduction to the city. You will get oriented, and have a sense of history at the same time. Ask him for a restaurant recommendation too!
Garth arranged for a resident of a township to give us a tour - don't miss the opportunity to get a feel for life beyond the obvious tourist attractions. We were a group of eight, and I think we would have been willing to pay extra to have a second guide so we could be a smaller group for that part of the tour. We felt conspicuous, but safe and welcome.
Also, the ATM's close early in the downtown area, and we almost couldn't pay him! Stop in at an ATM early in the day.
Garth is a wealth of knowledge, and seems to really enjoy his work: we REALLY enjoyed his work too!

Garth is one of the most knowlegable guides one could wish for. He explains the history and evolution of SA brilliantly. He is a patient teacher - and makes the statues and buildings come alive as you pass them.

A great tour to continue our understanding of apartheid and the effects on the country. Mike could not have been more energetic, knowledgeable and respectful to all of the residents that we were introduced to. This is a must if you want to really start to get a glimpse into the past, present and future.
