Description:

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town...

The Footsteps to Freedom walking tour of the historic heart of Cape Town tells the story of Cape Town and its people. We use streets, buildings, monuments, memorials and the passing street-scene as props develop a story of Cape Town and South Africa's dramatic past. Stories of Dutch and British colonial rule, slavery and apartheid, and finally our peaceful transition to a real democracy. We gather before 10h30 (Mon-Sat) in the lobby of the Taj Cape Town Hotel, located in centre of Cape Town's cultural and historic precinct. At 10h30 the 2½ hr walking tour starts from the steps of the Bishop Robert Gray Memorial, adjacent Taj Cape Town hotel.

Our guide, Hans, guided us during 3 hours in the city centre of Cape Town. Despite my high expectations, we received the opposite of what we expected from a tour called 'footsteps to freedom': a terrible one-sided approach to the history of Cape Town, where we were told amongst others that Namibians should be grateful for being under South Africa's... Hello Helena. Thank you for your frank email about your tour with Hans. I can only apologise again ..... as I did when you emailed me on 11 November and repeat my offer to tour with you personally next time you are in Cape Town, at my own expense, telling our story my way. You are perfectly within your rights... More

As a tour guide myself, I am very particular about the guides I hire for my groups and Footsteps did not disappoint. In fact, the way in which Garth wove stories of history while walking the beuatiful cityscape fo Capetown was fascinating and the guests wanted more. Thank you Garth for your professional, insightful tour of your city.

On our last day in Capetown we, 3 Americans and 3 Dutch, booked Footsteps to Freedom and met our guide Ivor, a retired physician, in our hotel. As we drove to Bokaap we listened to the history of Capetown, South Africa and Apartheid in all its forms from someone who lived as a child, student and family starting man through... More

We took two tours with Footsteps to Freedom; The city walking tour with Ivor and a full day tour to the wine region with Garth. Both were first rate and highly recommended. A superb mix of history and culture that made our Cape Town experience unforgettable... Footsteps to Freedom guides are consummate tourism professionals. You won't be disappointed....

My friend and I had the enormous pleasure of joining Garth on a full day tour of the Cape Point peninsula and transfer to Franschhoek and it was the most well spent time of our entire journey. A more knowledgeable and engaging guide is not to be found. Using the environment around us, Garth gave us insights in SA's history,... More

We did 3 tours with Garth's company. A walking tour focused on the Jewish experience in Cape Town hosted by Ivor, the Footsteps to Freedom walking tour led by Karin and a walking township tour of Langa. All of the guides were professional and well informed, and we felt we received an excellent picture of the history, life and cloture... More

We expected a standard guided tour of Cape Town and have received a comprehensive five hundred year history of South Africa, Cape Town and how it relates to the US and European timeline. After this very enlightened summary of a true history buff Garth Angus, we were taken around the center Cape Town and learned more about its architecture, political... More

We were there, my husband, Jim, a white American and I'm Malaysian Chinese. Very inspiring and informative your by Ivor. I did not know and it wasn't taught in school that the Indonesians from Java especially were enslaved by the Dutch and brought to Cape Town in the 1800s. Therefore the Cape Malay cuisine that we all enjoy now. So... More

Storytelling at its best. The history of Cape Town told with heart and soul while it is seen and felt during a walk through Cape Town.

This was an excellent walking tour, hosted/guided by Hans. Hans has both lived through the many changes to Cape Town for +/- 50 years and also has a strong grasp of historical context of the city on the prevailing world stage. The combination of these attributes made the walk very entertaining and highlighted the influence of diamonds, the slave trade... More
